There's a debate going on in my mentions about whether Widow's Bay is a comedy or not. There's no doubt that Fox News is, though.

One Irish person was refused citizenship recently over the language test after a six-year process despite doing the whole thing in Swedish. The same person teaches at university level in Swedish, and has published academic texts in the language.

Reading F.A. Hayek for a college assignment, "Liberty and Liberties" from "The Constitution of Liberty" (1960). A quick give gives me 4784 words in the text and 5112 words of footnotes. All I can think is "Ah lads!". ia600805.us.archive.org/35/items/The...

After having watched one episode of Widow's Bay some weeks ago, I would argue that it's not a comedy in the same way that attempted murder is not murder. Horses for courses, of courses.

People like Nick here sound stupid. However, if you combine that stupid with a likely campaign to grant #copyright to AI-generated works, then they become stupidly dangerous. [And yes, the campaign has begun. And no, it's not large. But yes, it needs to be stopped before it can grow.]

I truly hate these types of headlines. Like the typical one that says "This one GP practice was paid X millions of euros last year" without saying something like it's the largest fucking practice, with many doctors and nurses, serving one of the most disadvantaged parts of the country!

A retraction notice for an article with the title "AI and the crisis of the author" by Anchit Sathi:

"Editor's note (September 21,2026): We have removed this essay. AI was used in its preparation. The TLS editorial guidelines prohibit the use of AI in the writing and editing process. The author states that he was unaware of the policy."

I can imagine two motions at each of the clubs' next AGMs. 1 promising never to raise concerns or objections about the Zuckerbergs' activities in the local area, and the other to return the money with an impolite note advising them where to put it. I know which one I'd vote for.

The AI thing is particularly pernicious: the fundamental marketing pitch for generative AI is to remove opportunities for people to do work. "Upskilling" will only glut an ever-decreasing employment market. It's, like, turkeys being taught how to vote for Christmas.

I'd say podcasting will save RSS or something like it, and I can't comprehend it. You could see spotify trying to kill it, and the reasons were obvious: who best to capture the market as apple did with music and microsoft with office productivity tooling. But it failed. Failed utterly.

AntennaPod has never failed me. It's an android app, and even though it's available from the play store, I install it from F-Droid (which means I have to live without being able to use Chromecast, a boon my children vocally appreciate!).

What I can't reconcile with the lack of discoverability of news is that it's close to being addressed in podcasting. I find it very easy to find any podcast I want to listen to on my podcast app (AntennaPod), but maybe there's some non-"Free" dependency behind the scene that underlies it.

... Similarly, it could be vastly superior (than, say, social media services) for getting news/information to your target audience, if you were committed to that goal (and to the technology: the no. of websites I've seen drop #RSS upon redesign is both shocking and depressing).

I am of the view that #RSS (or an RSS-like technology) has the potential to be vastly superior for getting news to readers, especially those who are specific about the type of news they want to read, but I agree that a discoverability layer is sorely lacking. ...
