... I visit art museums quite a lot, especially ones in San Francisco which are always exhibiting something new. Although, a museum trip seems to be an inherently community-based activity. I don't think I've ever been to a museum alone. Always with friends or family, but I like it. 20 #ConArtInSitu

Have you ever gone to look at art on purpose? of your own free will? In most cases, it seems like I end up at art museums because they have a large historical impact in that place. When I was abroad and traveled to Vienna I simply had to go to the kunsthistorisches museum... 19 #ConArtInSitu

... The idea of a self-portrait feels more sophisticated. I think back to renaissance painting of portraits of royalty and people of significance. Or artists painting themselves in a posh manner. It feels like a self-portrait has to be more formal than a selfie is. 18 #ConArtInSitu

selfie as self-portrait Thinking about a selfie as a self portrait seems wrong in some way. A selfie seems like a thing that reserved for a spontaneous moment, like taking a picture with friends or getting a picture with a celebrity you met... 17 #ConArtInSitu

What is "craft"? Craft reminds me of Minecraft. Although Craft as a concept is about the intricacies of work that goes into making a body of work. Craft is a form of artistry. 16 #ConArtInSitu

@laurensieg.bsky.social’s piece is so amazing and truly encapsulates EDP. I took the expanded cinema class and learned about all of these processes, which makes her work so much more impressive. I love the incorporation of nature to make it feel more immersive. 14 #ConArtInSitu

Incredible work. The amount of work that went into tufting these rugs and also creating the lino cut pieces, to then pressing them on handmade paper. All around so much thought that went into these pieces, so incredibly impressive. 13 #ConArtInSitu

I have another class with Luke and it’s super cool to hear about his process of creating this website. It’s incredibly professional looking and solves a true problem in club organization. 12 #ConArtInSitu

This piece immediately reminded me of a Japanese piece of the Portuguese arriving in Japan. It’s interesting how so many depictions of colonization are so similar. 11 #ConArtInSitu

This piece reminds me a lot of home. It feels like an aerial view of valleys of farmland whenever I drive to my grandparents house in rural California. 10 #ConArtInSitu

These baskets interest me because of how tightly weaved they are. I wonder how long it takes to learn this technique. Here’s a question for the masses: What would you put in your basket? 9 #ConArtInSitu

This piece reminds me a lot of the flowers along the yellow brick road in wizard of oz. The divisions of flowers intrigues me because they aren’t quite organized or fully naturalistic. 8 #ConArtInSitu

This one is reminding me of spider webs, even though they’re supposed to be yam roots. It’s very interesting how long the piece is, encouraging viewers to walk along it rather than look up at it. 7 #ConArtInSitu

This one is reminding me of the doors in Monsters Inc. It has a very cartoonish style which is reminiscent of the art in the beginning and end of the Monsters Inc movies. 5 #ConArtInSitu

I’m really enjoying these pieces working in harmony and opposition of one another. Looking at them, I thought the left piece was taking dominance because of its vibrancy, but the piece on the right stands out because of its blue/white contrast. 4 #ConArtInSitu

I was thinking that these paintings on bark looked a lot like relief prints, to which I learned that the artist was a print artist for her whole life before switching to painting. The print style is certainly reflected in these pieces. 2 #ConArtInSitu

The more I write about this, the more confused I become. How does a banana duct taped to a wall cost more than a mortgage? It's not even a framed piece. All that's owned is a certificate. 18 #ConArtInSitu

What's stopping anyone from just duct taping a banana to a wall? Is the only appeal in the "actual" piece that it sold for over 6 million dollars? 17 #ConArtInSitu

NFT and Cryptocurrency Bananas such as NFT Banana Thug Life, and Bones and Bananas NFT All I recall about the NFT craze a few years ago was how dumb it was. The concept of ownership is very interesting with an NFT, which can be tied to the banana taped to wall. 16 #ConArtInSitu

Antonio Henrique Amaral's paintings of bananas tied up in ropes After a quick search, it appears that Amaral has a whole series of bananas being cut and tied in ropes. I am once again interested in the comparison of Amaral's obviously meaningful/impactful works vs taped banana. 15 #ConArtInSitu

I'm also curious about the meaning/intention behind Cattelan's piece. I think there's certainly something to be said about the fact that a banana is an inherently temporary object. It's par of a cycle. You buy a banana, eat it or bake it into something, and then buy some more. 14 #ConArtInSitu
100
Elizabeth Grist @egrist.bsky.social · 13/05/2026
...I'm wondering what thought went into Cattelan's piece? Was it a decision made in a quick moment? Did he carefully pick out a banana after going to every grocery store in the area? Was the specific color and gloss of the tape taken into consideration? 13 #ConArtInSitu

...print with two colors. There's color selection, sizing, determining what banana details he wanted to bring out. I guess my question is what really constitutes Maurizio Cattelan's banana piece as a legitimate art piece?... 12 #ConArtInSitu

This piece is strangely off-putting, after discussing with @ebaltimore04.bsky.social and @bloommwell.bsky.social, we decided it was very god-like and discombobulating. It feels like it has malicious intent. Reminds me of depictions of hell, with arms clawing to escape. 7 #ConArtInSitu

Pottery and glazes have always been interesting to me. It’s fascinating how glazes can look so wildly different from one another. I particularly enjoy number 23 for its thin line pattern. I’m curious about the process to achieve that look. 6 #ConArtInSitu

Big fan of this vase. I want to take a bite out of it. It has a very inviting nature which I appreciate. The spout being so small has a level of impracticality to it, which makes me wonder what alternate uses might this have? 5 #ConArtInSitu

Chex mix chair. This unsettles me a bit simply because this texture feels like it doesn’t make sense as a functional object. It’s also strangely bulky when it looks like it should be light and airy. 3 #ConArtInSitu

Took a look at another essay from "What Is Contemporary Art" and I've landed on Hans Ulrich Obrist's "Manifestos for the Future." He talks about the commonality between artistic and political manifestos and how the 20th century was so sure of itself... 18 #ConArtInSitu

Does art provide comfort? How or how not? Art can certainly provide comfort. I have several artists who I love, and their main work is drawing little guys. Anna Laura drew the piece attached below, and this piece brings me comfort simply because they're cute and having fun. 17 #ConArtInSitu

Should art have to make you feel? I don't think are should have to make you feel, but most art does. Even looking at a piece where you have no opinions about it, you at least look at the piece and say "oh yeah that's nice" or "not a fan of this" 16 #ConArtInSitu

Can a work of art make an argument? A work of art can absolutely make a argument. I feel that the purpose of a lot of art is to challenge the perceptions that viewers walk into the gallery with. Any form of challenge is inherently an argument. 14 #ConArtInSitu
