I took this photo for an artist friend of mine, Ashlyn Bennett. Her works are all about the body, femininity, and autonomy. this work reminded me of one of her recent pieces in the BFA exhibition.

class was cancelled today so I went back through my photos and noticed I forgot to talk about this piece. It is a sculpture and a light source

We walked through the design exhibit as our first stop at the DAM today! I believe I’ve seen this work before, but initially thought it was Posada and a relief print. Turns out ins screen print!!

Thinking about art from collectivist societies while walking through ‘the stars we do not see: Australian indigenous art’

I’m appreciating the DAM’s decision to pair contemporary art with ancient art. Such as the colored pencil drawing of Shuvinai Ashoona. Who uses style to tie back to cultural roots but depict a contemporary scene.

I was drawn to Claudel’s Fireside Dream sculpture, the warmth and ambiance the warm light provides. I’m curios whose idea to add the electric light was.

I am sitting with Bethany Collins’ Antigone series at the MCA Denver today.

how do we start? is our starting point always naive?
This question really struck me because I tend to follow my gut reaction every time I am in a space with art. I tend to bypass the labels, titles, etc and let what will gravitate to me gravitate.

Spending time with the octopus initiative today. I’m really enjoying interacting with the racks, having to roll out each to create a viewing space

Reflecting on Ana Maria Hernando’s 'Lluvia de Luna Llena', the piece I spent the most time with at the MCA last week, the use of materials is the most interesting part to me. The subtle collaged elements using color to hide at first glance are what made me want to look further.

"using the process of writing to understand art" is something I have been encouraged to do in my own artistic practice, I think this is a really cool connection to writing about contemporary art.

I think that contemporary has emerged from an art world that has access to so much information, data, resources, techniques, topics, etc. Contemporary acknowledges what has come before and how to push forward in commentary and expression.

‘Dumpling Diaspora’ is a metaphor for migration and memories, each dumpling is meticulously shaped, handled, packed; this really does relate to how clay remembers touch and handling. Secret ingredient is love!

I am really captivated by Ana María Hernando’s engaging titles. Particularly ‘at the hour of shipwreck and darkness, someone will rescue you’. They’re so narrative, especially for such abstract works.

Having just walked into the room with ‘the allies’, I feel like I’ve just walked into a story book. Where the wild things are meets the Lorax.

I am really drawn to “a prayer for the olive tree”. I really resonate with the practice of the hand embroidered edges being meditative and a thoughtful resonance with the material- a photo she took during a past season of life.

I just turned the corner around ‘waterfalls’ to find a bright pink radiating glow. So enticing! Exciting! Also somewhat eerie.

The use of texture in ‘rain full of moon’ relates to the texture of the tool in ‘waterfalls’. I like this parallel and the frill that both articulate when talking about joy and femininity.

‘Waterfalls’ feels encroaching. I both want to walk through and am nervous to.

#ConArtInSitu
‘Waterfalls’ by Hernando feels like an overflow and celebration of femininity and joy. There’s something all encompassing and almost intimidating about it too.

Engagement with art is one of the most important aspects of art imo. Whether engagement is apart of the concept of the piece or not, I think engagement and reactions to art is what makes art beautiful.
#ConArtInSitu
Art can be a process as well as a physical object, I think there is so much art in the process of crafting and that can be observed from the outside. I think a main difference between fine art and a craft is the intent or concept.

A museum is a place that houses art or artifacts for a purpose. Sometimes that purpose is education, expression, monetary gain, critique on society. I think museums have taken on a snooty attitude and can be exclusive.

What is art?
Art is a reaction to life and the provocative nature of existence.
