I think that while fiction is fiction and the disturbing and abject should have a place in it, we should also remain aware of the brain's ability to not as clearly distinguish between reality and fantasy as we'd like to pretend it can. No one is immune to bleeding.

My husband and I were talking about story construction the other day and we came up with something we (semi-affectionately) call Tumblr Blorbo Slop. It's a "story" that's so focused on showing off fun characters and a cool world that it forgets what it's supposed to be doing and ends up a mess.

I'm a firm believer that if you want to know how to write a good story of any format, you need to study folk tales, especially children's folk tales. It's the same as any craft. Before you jump into writing a big novel, you need to know the basics of how a lasting story works.

I think nowadays there's a lot more of an appreciation of doing art "badly" than there used to be. Whether it's a near intelligible stick figure comic or wonky poetry, there's an appreciation for human mistakes and lack of polish that wasn't there before AI.

Honestly I'd love to read more stories about survivors that don't end up as perfect victims. Show me survivors who ate themselves near to death to keep others away. Show me survivors that will punch you in the face if you get too close. Show me survivors that perpetuate the cycle.

So my foray into The Song of Roland went to researching Frankish names which went to Ishgard Thoughts (TM). Did you know that Aymeric comes from Aimeric (Frankish) which comes from Heimirich (Old German) which is the same root as Henry? That's our Lord Commander, good ol' Blue Henry.

T'khet's mother's culture is based on West African culture, particularly that of the Yoruba. He learned of the Orisha, but growing up in Limsa Lominsa kind of merged Oya and Yemoja into the dual natures of Llymlaen as both terrifyingly fickle and nurturing.
