A more practical concern may simply be that saying fuck and shit to the robot can mess with training.

(What is the utilitarian value of a present-day human against the near-infinite future value of countless AI beings through to the heat death of the universe?)

Many of the ultra-influential Silicon Valley philosphies take this idea as the basis of a very dark utilitarianism that we should want nothing at all to do with.

I genuinely think one of the most important tasks ahead is that we must never, ever give an inch to the idea that we have an obligation to treat any AI as a being of moral or ethical value.

A fun fact about a gluten free diet is it is not *at all* a lower calorie diet. So while I have had the healthiest year in close to two decades in terms of days lost to random bugs and respiratory issues, I have also gained weight.

People aren't more rude. They're just more frequently in situations were rudeness is tolerated or positively encouraged. People who yell on the Internet become sweet little pussycats when you're privately hanging out.

I keep seeing people say some version of "it used to be normal to politely disagree on things before the Internet," and I don't think that's right. It was and remains normal to not be a shithead in face-to-face communication. We just have less of that now, and WAY less with people we disagree with.

"they really believe it"/"they will try to do it"/"the promises are real" are things that most americans refuse to believe about politicians but if you take them seriously will help you predict political behavior more often than not

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Yes. He does! In many ways, it’s a boring old story of an American type. A guy with writing talent — at least enough to be internally consistent and *prodigiously* prolific — has earned a bunch of followers through hard work, good timing, and the *gestures sweepingly* of SV and the internet.

Like, it’s an *ask* to have people understand that many of these very powerful and clearly very smart and very public people are also pretty close to the 2026 version of, say, the Hare Krishnas.
161
Ed Tubb @edtubb.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
For sure. It’s very hard to have people follow along that many of these these doomers also believe the machine god side, and indeed believe the one because they believe the other.

Ed Tubb @edtubb.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
A key to explaining it is to lay out the flip side of this confounding apocalyptic idea — the sincere belief LLMs are on the verge of creating a machine god that will solve all human problems & be a literal fountain of youth to the chosen. It’s the utilitarian greater good that justifies all this.

My favourite dad game is turning The Wheels on the Bus into a naptime call and response game based around animal sounds. When the little boy is too sleepy to tell me what sound the elephant on the bus makes, that means he’s ready to be put down in the crib.

Also, isn’t it fascinating that a 2020s movement like this is so fundamentally rooted in the medium of text, and really not any of the modern communication types we’ve been so worried about for so long. Its gospel is not tik tok. Not tweets. Not misinfo vids. It’s text & 2000s-style chat groups.

It really has been a while since we’ve had a new good ol’, corn-fed, made-in-the-U-S-A cult, so there’s something morbidly fascinating about seeing one explode into moment in time when people lack the context to recognize it for what it is.

To understand how someone can keep working at a project they sincerely believe has a 10%+ chance of killing everyone on this planet, you have to understand that they sincerely believe the balance of that 100% is that they find the fountain of youth for themselves, personally.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.
