A study in HS shows that a chatbot trained to act as a tutor did not bolster learning, and the standard chatbot harmed it. Edutopia is not deterred, looks to college students for confirmation. The article ends with what looks like ads for Khanmigo and MagicSchool. #EdTech #EduSkyAI #EduAI

"AI does not suffer from bias, fatigue, or inconsistency, making it theoretically capable of delivering equal and objective education to all students." This misconception is incredibly dangerous to teachers and students. These systems tend to amplify, not erase, bias. #AI #TLSky #EduSkyAi

I'm just going to throw out there that one thing we can do about it is not use generative AI. (This suggestion is also free, by the way.) #EduSky #EdChat #AIEducation

I guess if you consider 'marking' student writing to be comparing two pieces of writing and determining which one is better... okay? Another case of tech changing criteria rather than meeting them. "AI essay markers have been around for the 1960s" <- Yep, this isn't the hard part. #AIinEducation

I think from a systems perspective, adding more ed tech will make things worse. In my experience, most ed tech just results in additional demands over time, and it doesn't end up saving time without sacrificing quality, treating students as data, and sucking the joy out of teaching.

Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
Yes, but this premise is that we have a terrible system, so we're going to create trainings that make it an individual duty to overcome barriers with outside tech that has major problems, rather than fix education. Do you think that they won't continue to squeeze as soon as you can breathe a bit?

Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
Software is not your 'partner'. And the whole idea of 'correct' prompting puts the onus on the user to make the technology work effectively, blaming them when it's not useful. Yes, it can save time, but there is a cost to offloading thinking about lessons.
000
Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
Yes, that's what makes this a sales pitch for the new tech.
000
Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
This is my point, though, that instead of a PD around solving a problem in teaching and learning, it's a PD that's "here's a tool, hope you can find some use in it. If not, never mind." I don't think that's a good use of limited PD time, especially with the dangers we already know of using it.

Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
Lol, yes, I love MS, but this is the danger, that our automation often doesn't automate, but just asks others to do the job for us. We have to be careful what we're doing doesn't put the onus on students to compensate for what's lost in automation.

Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
I think you are a positive person, and I appreciate that about you. I don't see any ed tech as saving teacher time in the long run. I don't think AI will save time in absorbing that material unless it facilitates the avoidance of absorption. We should be allowed time to absorb it.

"And the impact? Immediate. This session kick-started AI adoption" "Practical, hands-on training is essential—the more teachers feel confident using AI, the more they’ll integrate it into their daily practice." Your goal is obviously for them to use the tech.
200
Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
That discrepancy may come from a mismatch in what is classified as 'AI' in different circles. My broader concern is that your goals appear to be more about promoting tech adoption and less about effective teaching and learning.
100
Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
From your description, it seems like the main outcome you wanted from the session was for teachers to have a positive view of integrating software into their workflow, in particular Copilot. This is why it comes off as a marketing or sales session. Where do student experience or outcomes come in?
000
Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
Isn't planning your lessons focusing on high-impact teaching? If you say it's not automating that process, why this quote: "What MS Copilot can actually do— lesson planning, admin, differentiation." What does Copilot do if not automate cognitive work? Why nothing on the risks of that?
100
Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
If you were doing a 'PD' on how to use Copilot, which is what you described, then it's training on a product, not training on 'AI'. If that training was focused on encouraging teachers to use this product rather than on teaching and learning (again, as described), Microsoft should be paying you.

Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
Effective at what? What are the impacts on student outcomes? Why in the world would you fob off lesson planning onto a piece of software knowing the benefits teacher engagement in planning has on lesson efficacy? Where are the cautions on the risks? It seems more like tech marketing than anything.

I find it disturbing that "Ditch That Textbook" would advocate for circumventing thinking through how a template could work for a particular class. This is the type of cognitive labor that deepens teacher understanding of pedagogy and student experience. #EdTech #AIinEducation #EduSky

This post implies that 'AI' and LLMs are equivalent terms, and this person is running a PD on AI! The article itself demonstrates how #AIinEducation PD has become an avenue for marketing the products big tech is pushing on schools, rather than focusing on what works for student learning.

I already looked at the paper when you sent the abstract. It's not relevant to the conversation, and your description of what it's about is entirely inaccurate. Are you sure you're referencing the one you're thinking of?

Edtechification @edtechification.bsky.social · 16/03/2025
Also, can you clarify why you linked the abstract to that paper? It doesn't appear to be related to what I was referring to in my post. Thanks!

Although focused on k12, so a lot will not apply to you, this is a good starting point for finding research based approaches for the cs classroom. Much will still be applicable, you'll just have to skim over the things that skew younger.

I am more familiar with k12 education, so I would look at resources from csteachers.org or csedresearch.org, with the latter being more a clearinghouse for papers. Raspberrypi.org has excellent teacher facing resources, and the hs level may still apply to you.

So the 'companion' is a chatbot? That's a piece of software. I don't understand why you're saying it isn't.

I'm not worked up, just don't understand who this 'Lumi' is you keep referring to. I hope the screenshot of the homepage shows how it's not helpful in answering the question. Can you just tell me? Is it a person? Software? Stuffie? The interaction below is why I thought 'Lumi' was a platform.
A post reading "This still doesn't tell me who 'Lumi' is and why they would make a good companion. Is it just a piece of software that the students are supposed to feel companionship with?" With a reply from Learn with Lumi reading: "Not at all. It is what I previously described, which is essentially a platform for homeschooling and independent learning that makes doing so easy for families. Again, learnwithlumi.com explains all this."

Is that 'okie dokie' as in you're agreeing with me that a platform is not a companion? You keep saying that it's explained on the site, but I hope a quick screenshot of the front page shows how it doesn't explain how it's a 'companion'. (Also, please note the use of alt text.)
Landing page for "Learn with Lumi", including a paragraph explaining some services, a list of various menu options, and some marking text about becoming "a knowledge ninja"

Even with only 300 characters and an image, it seems like we should at least get a vague sense of what this product actually does, rather than a series of buzzwords haphazardly strung together. Also, BlueSky makes alt text so easy. Why not use it? #AIinEducation #Edtech #accessibility

rather than advocating for better teaching and learning conditions. It sets up a race to the bottom in which each iteration leads to more pressure on teachers and poorer education for students. We know how to solve the problem of teacher workload: more staff, better conditions, higher pay. (3/3)

lend themselves to arguments that ask teachers to take on more tasks, often tasks related to the tech (data, PD, and just tech wrangling). Also, these arguments tend to put responsibility on the individual teacher to make the workload more manageable, (2/3)

One thing I think gets lost in the drive for efficiency or productivity is the role of the broader ecosystem in which these decisions happen. Purported increases in efficiency or productivity, regardless of whether they decrease the quality of the learner experience in other ways, (1/3)

For the relational aspect of it, does the act of figuring out how to word my feedback for one student in particular give me more time to reflect on who they are and their individual needs? Does it matter to them that I invested that time in them? Does it matter to me?
