P.S. the cultural sector is in real trouble nonetheless, and could do with a Secretary of State who didn't view it as vaguely embarrassing, a bit effete, and getting in the way of a good lie-in.

“Find a play. Squat a building. Steal a van. Now make a show.” Thank you, Mike Bradwell ❤️
Portrait of Mike Bradwell with text that says 1948-2025“Find a play. Squat a building. Steal a van. Now make a show.” - Thank you, Mike Bradwell

As we begin rehearsals for our new show Biting Point, in our 14th year as a company, we are saddened to hear of the passing of Mike Bradwell: a cavalier, a pioneer and an accidental founding father of Middle Child.

I didn’t know Mike personally, but first met him while training at LAMDA, when he came to speak to the four directors on my course. This was just after the release of his brilliantly provocative article challenging aspiring theatre makers to: “Find a play. Squat a Building. Steal a van. Now make a show.”

I’ve just gone back to that article and it could easily have been published today, such was its prescience in its prediction that times were hard and getting harder for the industry, and its reliance on West End musicals and celebrity casting. Mike was clear that, for the health of the industry, it desperately needed people to break from the usual route and do their own thing – much as Mike had done in the founding of Hull Truck Theatre, many years earlier. I didn’t steal a van that day, but following our chat, I did find myself motivated like never before. Something really resonated from Mike’s fearless, DIY energy that said we didn’t have to ask permission and wait for a seat at the table. I went straight to the nearest pub and, with the help of those who would become our founding members, began drafting a manifesto for the company that is Middle Child.

Something permanently shifted for me that day. Mike’s way of making theatre using real-world improvisations – literally using the world around you as inspiration and shaping it into something live and alive – struck a chord. He was everything I’d always wanted to be - fearless, unique and completely unafraid to do things differently. Within months, his ethos became the foundation of Middle Child.

We read everything we could of his, desperate to understand how it all worked and leaning into his trademark style. Sometimes perhaps leaning a bit too hard. In our first week in Hull, we took his revolutionary improvisation methods to heart and found ourselves sat in the back of a police van, after accidentally locking Princes Avenue down with armed police. More on that one day, I’m sure. Turns out blurring the lines between real life and performance should be handled with care, though I’m sure Mike and his troupe saw the inside of many police vans in their day. But we’d made a start. Thanks to a few hours spent with Mike, we felt we had the permission to spend a lifetime doing it our way.

Mike Bradwell’s legacy is massive, particularly on the city we call home. He founded Hull Truck Theatre, the story of which you can read more of in his brilliant book The Reluctant Escapologist, championed new writing and new methods, and showed generations of theatre makers that rules are made to be rewritten. For Middle Child, his words weren’t just inspiration – they were the match that lit the fuse.

So thank you, Mike. For the spark. For provoking us to do things differently. For showing us that theatre can be bold, messy, and defiantly human. Theatre needs voices that are unafraid to take risks and stand out from the crowd more than ever. Voices like yours.

We never ended up stealing a van (still time?), but we did make some art. And we definitely wouldn’t have, without you.

Paul Smith, Artistic Director and CEO
