There is a public information film that I talk about before getting into discussion of Miller with my criminal law students. I have been getting increasingly blank looks, so decided to show them it. This may have been a deeper rabbit hole than planned, but I proudly present: tvark.org/old-smokers

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.

Behind sharp banter
Ted's loneliness echoes loud
A clown with no cheer

Peggy watches them dance
Yellow coats full of glory
Her dreams slip further

Between dance sets, hush
Barry jokes to hid the ache
Yvonne smiles, then sighs

Knobbly knees parade
Spike narrates to empty seats
Applause is long gone

Xylophone taps soft,
Gladys strikes notes to no-one
Silence hums along
