While I am biased, this is a perfect book for the season, to hold onto and re-read when you need reassurances that you are enough and you can get through this. I hope you’ll consider this story of self-acceptance, ancestry, and making a way when there’s no way, and get a copy of ROOT MAGIC.

Actual historical events are in the book, like the integration of Charleston County schools in 1963, Gwendolyn Brooks winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, as well as Gullah Geechee folklore, food, language, and rootwork.

Quote from me: "So much of the things written about conjure magic and rootwork were written by people outside of the community. They didn't have an understanding of the practices, so it was important that I portray it as a way to protect those you love, hold onto your ancestral ties, and keep your people together."

Happy Hoodoo Heritage Month! Today is Nat Turner Day and I always think about ROOT MAGIC. This novel is a great introduction for kids and adults to Hoodoo and Gullah Geechee culture AND the family in this award-winning Southern Gothic story shares this revered ancestor’s last name.

Then there's a wasp thingy with a skull for a head wearing a gold crown, and flying above a black hat that's sprouted tentacles. The hat-wearer peers at the reader, but we can only see its red pupils.

I don't know how to describe the last one, but it has lots of faces, eyes, and color. And ghosts.
