I just discovered that @bcferries.bsky.social used to be segregated! I don't know why this came as a surprise - it makes sense. I met someone whose grandmother was not allowed to sit in the "white" section. She had to sit in the "Indian" section. This history should be acknowledged.

always optimistic that the journalism industry can become a fairer and more inclusive place, and pointing out structural failures and biases where they occur is part of building that future. to that end, please read this editorial from IndigiNews:

🇨🇦 Indiginews was refused status to get Google payout funds for 2023 cuz their parent corp of that yr got that cash. Postmedia got paid even tho they since laid off many reporters. Indiginews is women-led & now independent. Support their work!

“tâpwêwin media is built on the concept of tâpwêwin — a natural law in nehiyaw (Cree) culture that reflects a commitment to truth-telling and integrity in storytelling.” Much needed in times where certain platforms have regressed back to sharing mis/disinformation. Congrats @indiginews.bsky.social!

Of course CBC got the largest chunk ($7 mil), determined before this list came out. A number of prominent publications — APTN, Indiginews, Ricochet — are missing from the list of outlets chosen to get any of the ONA funds.

No Indigenous community organization has psychologists they can pay and charge back NIHB for. (That I've found) Most are counsellors a therapists... And NIHB only allows psychologists to bill them. Maybe the problem is bureaucracy.
