EcosystemEngineer @ecosystemengineer.bsky.social · 22hIf we can't get our current forests back up and running, there's very little point in even thinking about planting any more trees. Herbivores create and maintain habitats by eating and trampling vegetation. We need to learn from them and give them the conditions to fulfill this essential role. 000
EcosystemEngineer @ecosystemengineer.bsky.social · 22hA couple of hundred elephants would really sort this place out and in no time at all the native wildlife would return and thrive. If no elephants are available it's possible to get similar results with cattle or even sheep, plus a bit of well targeted chainsaw work. 101
EcosystemEngineer @ecosystemengineer.bsky.social · 22hLook at this google streetview scene in Japan at map ref 44°00'52.5"N 142°58'55.8"E There's no sign of any herbivore activity here at all and because of this it barely functions as a dynamic habitat. The problem is that it looks beautiful and so people want to protect and duplicate it. 100
EcosystemEngineer @ecosystemengineer.bsky.social · 22hMy research shows most forests have a tree density that is far too high. With no mega-herbivores around anymore and with wood as a fuel now greatly diminished because of fossil fuels most forest structures have suffered greatly. 100
