New paper coming soon: The Legend of Land Sparing
a screen capture of an article proof that reads: As institutions mobilize ambitious land-use transition agendas, dominant policy narratives risk constraining their transformative potential. The land sparing–land sharing (SpSh) framework, introduced in the early 2000s, offered a compelling heuristic by positing two mutually exclusive strategies: intensifying production to “spare” land for nature, or integrating biodiversity within agricultural landscapes. While SpSh stimulated valuable empirical and theoretical work, its simplifying assumptions proved ill-suited to the complexity of land systems, leading many scholars to move beyond the debate. In this discussion, we ponder if a reductionist land sparing revival has gained traction among policy platforms, think tanks, and agribusiness actors. This rhetoric reframes sustainability as contingent on agricultural intensification, presenting yield maximization as a proxy for ecological and social progress. To understand this potential resurgence, we first trace the genealogy of SpSh, unpacking the discursive strategies that construct its legitimacy. Then, we showcase how strident contemporary land sparing rhetoric is expressed across prominent think tank publications, environmental policy positions, agribusiness communications, and academic literature. Drawing on science and technology studies, we ask if land sparing has become a “policy legend”: a socio-technical imaginary that mobilizes actors around a technocratic vision of land use, despite empirical critiques and viable alternatives. Our discussion explores how a folktale version of land sparing would narrow the parameters of food system transformation, legitimizing land concentration and reinforcing industrial paradigms under the guise of sustainability. We conclude with a warning: if indeed a simplified land sparing is resurging in its discursive power, more plural and just pathways for land governance will become foreclosed.

Thinking aloud, on a recent ecohana.org call all the issues around making a commons work (and reflecting on many issues & failures) came up. While I haven't read it deeply there's an interesting interview by @adamcalo.bsky.social w/ @davidbollier.bsky.social touching on Ostrom commons limitations:
Highlighted excerpt from 'Property vs. the Commons' (Adam Calo interviewing David Bollier, July 2026, https://adamcalo.substack.com/p/property-vs-the-commons ):

[David Bollier:] "We came to realize that the [Elinor] Ostrom approach [Ostrom was the renowned, Nobel laureate scholar of the commons] is grounded in the economistic framework of commons-as-resources. I don’t want to say this approach is “wrong,” but it is limited. Because we realized that the commons is a social system of relationality."

I really struggle with this argument from pragmatism: "Yes, the principles of environmental justice are correct and moral, but they are difficult to achieve, therefore we must abandon and dneigrate them." It is a self fullfiling prophecy. From: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Similar alignments with wider political goals and powerful ministries have not happened for social innovations, which helps explain their lower political profile and policy support. Appeals to principles like ‘equity and justice; pluralism and inclusion; and respectful and reciprocal human-nature relationships’ (IPBES, Reference O'Brien, Garibaldi and Agrawal2024: 6) are noble and hard to disagree with, but less effective in mobilising wider political support needed to accelerate transformations. More generally, policy relevance seems to have been of marginal interest for transformations researchers, with a recent special issue editorial concluding that the development of policy tools and frameworks is ‘one of the most urgent yet less developed aspects of the field’ (De Castro et al., Reference De Castro, De Theije, Jain and Adger2025: 4).

My family has paid taxes on our land for 12 generations. We have died fighting and defending our land. We are not the evil monsters that you claim we are. We have successfully managed property across multiple generations constantly battling legislation that takes and takes and takes from us. Can you look me in the face and tell me that I am bad? Do you have generations of family members buried on your property? Do you write
the checks to the state and the lawyers to defend every inch of the land that your family had covered with their blood, sweat and tears? I know you love emotional arguments, look at the facts and then tell me to my face that you are going to take my land.
