If you are looking for an example of Anglo-centric British nationalism, then Andy Burnham provides it. His "Number 10 North" will be based in Manchester, in the southern half of Great Britain.

How do you feel about England being in two unions without its own national voice/democracy? Might it be better for England, Scotland and Wales to join independently? I have to say, I really don't see the point of the UK if we're in the EU.

A positive that has emerged (or become more visible) is Russia's hostility to the EU and EU enlargement. They don't like the prospect of neighbours joining the EU and achieving better outcomes than Russia.

Ordinary Scottish and Welsh people are not to blame anymore than I am. I genuinely feel sorry for them having to put up with the England-Britain conflation and the Westminster psychodrama. At least we English, as the majority, could collectively end this.

English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
I think you're harbouring too much of a grudge against folk that want the best for Scotland and Wales. Ultimately, England is far larger and our politicians could have stuck up for England. They didn't. Blame the people that have let England down rather than the Scots and Welsh.
100
English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
Blame the Westminster political class for that. If they let the SNP do it, then more fool them.

English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
I'll judge each on their merits. Some, like Brown, I find contemptible. Others like Kenyon Wright I find principled. I certainly don't blame Scots (or Welsh) in general.

English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
Nairn wasn't pro-English but he recognised and warned about the problems for England in being excluded from the devolution jamboree. Kenyon Wright, a believer in popular sovereignty rather than independence, believed that England too deserved its own say and parliament if need be.

English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
I take a different of Brits like Gordon Brown. They expect Scotland to have the benefits of Union while England gets regionalised to accommodate his 'nations and regions' model.

English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
Scottish indy supporters can think what they like as far as I'm concerned, they can demand what they like and are not compelled to consider the other nations of the UK.
100
English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
Some Scots like Nairn and Kenyon-Wright foresaw the problems it would cause for England and argued for an English parliament.
100
English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
John Smith and Gordon Brown are primarily responsible for pushing the regionalisation policy but the English in Labour went along with it. Ordinary Scottish and Welsh citizens aren't responsible for it.

Apologies. Genuinely feel sorry for the Scots and Welsh caught up in the Anglo-British psychodrama. It won't get any better soon. Meaningful reform isn't possible until unionists confront the elephant in the room: England. And they won't do that for fear of upsetting the Union applecart.

Popular sovereignty - "we the people" - isn't decided by social scientists looking for unique cultural traits. The "we" - the nation - is self-defining. Though unique cultural traits might strengthen national sentiment.

And, possibly, a collective sense of obligation or purpose. These are lacking between Ukraine and Russia. And, dare I say it, increasingly between the nations of the UK.
130
English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 25/04/2025
But national identities are not set in stone. Nor are nations homogenous (there's little commonality between Alaska and Hawaii, yet both might feel strongly American). What makes a nation is not shared traits but, rather, a collective sense of self.
110
English Commonwealth @ecommonwealth.bsky.social · 25/04/2025
The onus is then on someone to prove their national identity by reeling off a list of cultural traits that are specific to that national identity.

Westminster politicians routinely fail to specify that their health announcements relate to England and prefer to talk about 'the NHS' rather than 'NHS England', so the abolition of NHS England will make little difference as far as #SayEngland and #ThatsDevolved are concerned.

Surely one of the reasons that the issue of ethnicity is so totemic in discussions about Englishness and who belongs, is that English identity cannot rely on democracy, representation and citizenship, because Britain denies us the normal trappings of nationhood.
