It’s the peak solar emission and also the atmosphere is transparent in those wavelengths so that radiation reaches the ground. I mention this when I teach about climate and biology for bio students, and also when I teach about the atmosphere for non bio students!

I regularly buy water bottles at thrift stores. Stick with a known brand name and you have the option of replacing the lid still for less than the original bottle.

Washington folks, don’t sleep on WSDOT’s e-bike rebate program. My husband recently had his e-bike stolen outside the UW gym. He applied to the rebate program and was selected. It’s a lottery but almost 20% of those who apply get it. Rebate amount varies by income, from $300 to $1,200.

Overleaf has GitHub integration, so I use that to version control the writing docs, the code and figures have a separate GitHub that gets published to zenodo for the submitted versions. And I keep copies of the submitted pdfs separately labeled. I have no solution for managing the line numbers 😖.

We think that a much more systematic investigation of how process representation and parameter choices impact land carbon behavior is needed to understand these relationships and to adequately quantify the uncertainty in future land C. (6/6)

Abigail Swann, PhD @ecoclimatelab.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
One thing we *didn't* find is a clear relationship between process representation and land carbon behavior. ESMs with dynamic nutrients, fires, more complex soils, and dynamic vegetation aren't distinguishable from those that lack these processes. (5/6)
111
Abigail Swann, PhD @ecoclimatelab.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
The timing of vegetation C change is relatively consistent across ESMs, but they vary a lot in the timescale response of soil C. ESMs think that tropical carbon is the most vulnerable to loss, and this is despite the fact that they are missing many relevant ways that trees should die. (4/6)
101
Abigail Swann, PhD @ecoclimatelab.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
We looked across 10 emissions-driven ESMs and found that despite many differences there are coherent patterns of C gain and loss. C goes into vegetation first, mostly in the tropics. When emissions are zero or declining C is lost from the tropics, but keeps gaining in mid and high latitudes. (3/6)

Abigail Swann, PhD @ecoclimatelab.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Most CMIP type simulations look at periods of positive emissions of CO2, and that means that atmospheric CO2 is rising and photosynthesis tends to be elevated. But what happens to land carbon under zero or declining emissions? (2/6)

Also, the same emissions could result in a range of atm co2 (before we even amount for how atm co2 translates into temperature). This is why when we try to directly represent the carbon cycle we are going to see the range across models grow. Some discussion here www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-how...

I’d argue that our uncertainty is not growing, we are just more fully characterizing the real uncertainty with emission driven runs.

Yes, it’s bonkers! And since IAMs don’t adequately capture the non carbon aspects of forest cover change from changing evapotranspiration and albedo (and likely even the carbon uptake of planting forests) the impacts of BECCS are very poorly assessed.

ZEC is inherently time dependent and as you point out the carbon cycle responses span a range of timescales! It seems typical to evaluate ZEC at 50yrs, 100yrs, and equilibrium. I think it is very likely that the three time points have different relevant process.

In addition to much longer simulations to capture land and ocean carbon responses we also need to actually sample the uncertainly in (especially) land carbon sink! A single ESM can likely produce a wide race of land carbon sink, and zecmip and flat10mip only have order 10 ESMs each with a single run

I agree it is a huge pain but as a search committee it allows us to act faster without waiting for letters. As a letter writer I find the first letter for a candidate takes a lot of time but the subsequent letters are much faster. In other words I do see an argument for asking up front.
