Book Publishers Are Quietly Using More AI. Staff Are Revolting
Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

David Byrne is no stranger to bringing extraordinary ideas to life. But what about ideas that are ahead of their time? How do we reawaken them? Flora chatted with David about his new book “Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up,” and which ideas resonated with him most.

I dreamed of baby kittens last night! They were floating in a container full of water, so it was stressful for a bit but they were ok when I got them out right before waking up. Sorry, I've been having stressful dreams for the past few weeks so this was a nice change. Wishing you safe-kitten dreams!

I have tons of examples like this because expanding my kids' food preferences was a goal, but also because I had built multidimensional dynamic models of the sorts of things they liked and disliked over more than a decade. Can an AI do that? Maybe. But that knowledge is more than a list 🙄

ecleclecl.bsky.social @ecleclecl.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Can an AI accrue all that knowledge. Probably. But I also have a lot of inferred knowledge from the experience of eating the specific things. For example, my kid who hates mushrooms will eat them mixed with meat in a lasagna, which I hypothesized and tested based on their context-specific texture.

Yes! My kids still tease me about the time I referred to one of them as, "the one who doesn't like beans", after a momentary lapse of confusion 😂 Yes, I know every single one of my family's preferences and dispreferences in all their context-sensitive complexity and as they have changed over time.

Yeah it’s not lost on me that it was a man who suggested family meal planning is rote. Research and loved experience shows that women structure their invisible labor to make the labor the men in their lives are willing to do predictable, ergo suitable to routinize.

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

I may offer suggestions on academese, but you will never lose points or regard. My goal is to nurture your human voice ." Wish me luck!
