Here's a quote from @ecetemelkuran.bsky.social beautifully written book TOGETHER and an explanation that leads on from that - to the founding of a podcast called All for the Love of Pubs - the Alt Text for the images with further work by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social and @carneross.bsky.social
A quotation from Ece Temelkuran’s Together: A Manifesto Against the Heartless World, page 132. It asks whether people are willing to participate fully in economic life and decision-making, and whether capitalism can be transformed so companies have moral responsibilities to employees as important as production and profit. It ends by asking whether we have the stamina to begin with practical steps such as building cooperatives and strengthening mutual aid in our communities.

This is it in full:

“But then how many of us today are willing to participate fully in economic life? To take part in the decision-making process in the workplace, and contribute to the complicated business of budgeting? Does our nihilism – be it the result of many repeated disappointments, of a learned reluctance due to generations of depoliticisation - allow us to get up and shoulder the burden of transforming Capitalism? The question of our times will soon be this: are there enough people who are willing enough to join the game after all these years of being kept out of it, and especially when the game itself is falling apart? Can we transform the company, the clockwork at the heart of Capitalism, towards an entity with auditable moral responsibilities towards its employees that matter as much as the level of production and profit? Can we imagine and realise an economic policy that eventually removes the idea of private property and renders the accumulation of capital both illegal and immoral? And, most importantly, do we have the stamina to begin this immense work with small steps such as building a cooperative in our field of work, or strengthening mutual aid groups in our own communities? Do we have enough will to crack the wall that we are about to hit, especially when the sense of an ending feels so solid? After all, when we have such problems, speaking only of less seems not to be enough, but then what does?”

Ece Temelkuran, TOGETHER, p.132 Illustrated logo for All For The Love Of Pubs: a large red heart entwined with green hop vines and ears of barley. A cream banner runs across the heart carrying the words “ALL FOR THE LOVE OF PUBS” in large red lettering, against a black background.

All For The Love Of Pubs (AftLoP) is a podcast being founded to talk about Britain’s pubs: why they matter, why so many are struggling or closing, the people and communities fighting for them, and what we can actually do about it. It is being created as an independent platform for conversation, investigation, ideas and action — bringing together publicans, pub-goers, campaigners, communities, policymakers and others who believe pubs are worth fighting for.

This in turn is to be the platform from which we launch a simple national proposition: one million people putting in £10 each to raise £10 million to start buying pubs. The aim is to establish a National Trust for Pubs, acquiring pubs and holding them in perpetuity for public benefit, rather than allowing them to be treated as disposable property assets.

The first £10 million would provide the capital to begin buying and restoring pubs and demonstrate a different model: pubs run sustainably for the benefit of the people who use them, the people who work in them and the communities around them, with surpluses reinvested rather than extracted.

The ambition is bigger than saving individual pubs. It is to create a new model of ownership and stewardship — treating pubs as vital social and civic infrastructure and giving ordinary people a direct stake in protecting them for future generations.A copy of George Monbiot’s book Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet is held in the foreground outdoors. Beside it, a shaggy black and grey dog called Pod looks up at the camera with a happy, open-mouthed expression. The background is a sunlit landscape of long, dry summer grass and trees.A hand holds up Carne Ross’s book The Leaderless Revolution: How Ordinary People Will Take Power and Change Politics in the 21st Century. The title appears prominently in large red and black lettering. The photograph is taken inside a bus, with blue seats, yellow handrails and green trees visible through the windows in the background.

“Do you sometimes fear that the self you’ve put together for the new country, the performative self, will take over, & you will be left without a real self?” Hanging on every word of this road found book. Dear @ecetemelkuran.bsky.social, I’ll remember you. a fellow stranger (who’s gone back “home”)
Cover of a book of letters from the author and journalist Ece Temelkuran to her readers. It is entitled Nation of Strangers and on the cover is an olive branch. The letters are about being unhomed, homelessness and fascism and finding a common language among those already affected who, in each other’s company, can unsmile the smile they put on for others. Sign of a social justice bookshop in Utrecht, The Netherlands called Savannah Bay which I fortunately stumbled on while traveling.
