Here's the working rule for “try and” vs. “try to”:
✏️ Formal writing takes “try to”: annual reports, proposals, grant applications, anything that goes past a legal department
✏️ Everything else can take either: email, blog posts, slide decks, articles, anything that reflects how you actually talk. “Try and” has been in print since 1686, Fowler defended it in 1926, and Garner still calls it a standard idiom in British English.
So when it turns up in a draft, the question isn’t whether it’s correct. It’s whether the register fits the document.
