Dropped my first newsletter of the year at fan/work. Talked about some amazing experiences and the lessons I've learned over the past year, and why the best part of fandom (creativity and community) needs tending. fanwork.beehiiv.com/p/fandom-is-...

Fandom is still about community.
The one lesson I learned about being in fandom in 2025 is that it's still all about people, belonging, creating, and community.

Can folks in the Conclave fandom share their favorite fanwork/fan projects? I remember seeing a zine and a video game? And I just want to learn more because the part of me that was born and raised Catholic is so intrigued by the fact that this movie has a passionate fanbase.

BINI's management has since organized two runs, the most recent one happening just this past Sunday. The Blooms Run Club has also organized a challenge that saw participants contributing over 120,000 kilometers, which then unlocked a donation to an animal rescue non-profit.

One of their members, Aiah, decided to share a route spelling out the word 'BINI' on Strava and runners who were also Blooms (what BINI's fans are called) decided to run the route, eventually finding other fans who would join the club. The Blooms Run Club Strava group now has around 4,000 members.

For the people seeing this thinking, "What's BINI?" They're an 8-member girl group from the Philippines who have been making waves especially over the past year, when two songs from their latest EP went mainstream and the group's popularity skyrocketed as a result—three years after they launched.

It was funny but yeah, we expect something once you get to HNW/affluent spaces and that includes smell. I think of this in terms of how social media has visualized different imaginings of what a 'rich girl' looks like, smells like, and even dances like.

I dislike that a chunk of idol or music fandom is people yelling "My cake is better than yours!" (as someone so eloquently summed it up for me) when I'm here eyes wide walking down a row of patisseries just staring at the treats and going "This exists?!", grinning and wiggling.

Laro kind of translates to playful or playfulness and BINI and their fandom have it in spades.

In this house, we love BINI fan art. I went to a concert for the PPop group BINI recently and got this bus ticket and stamp-like stickers from a fellow Bloom (that's what the BINI fans are called). It's this laro energy that I found in the fandom that made me want to connect with people.

It's this laro energy (laro roughly translates to playful in this context) that I found in the BINI fandom that made me stay and want to seek out community.
A bus ticket with holes punched on it like you would get in typical Filipino buses on the left and three stickers that look like stamps on the right. From top to bottom, the stickers represent different songs from the Philippine pop group, BINI.

From top to bottom, the stickers represent different songs from the Philippine pop group, BINI. The topmost sticker is purple for Na Na Na, the middle sticker is yellow for the song Pantropiko, and the bottom sticker is black representing Strings. Each sticker has elements connected to the song and its music video.

"Bluesky is awesome now, for how long?" I mean, look, all things change and end, we will all die, earth will be uninhabitable in a billion years, then the sun will expand and destroy the planet, and the universe will die a slow death of proton decay. But BEFORE THAT, let's make this place fun, okay?

What's the best new habit you picked up when you got older? I remember reading an intro to a fiction anthology where someone says they say, "I appreciate it," after saying 'Thank you,' and it's stuck with me ever since. I try to make sure to say those two things when I do feel happy and grateful.

We don’t have to repeat the mistakes of Twitter by following these outrage farmers when they come here. We can all just agree that these people universally suck and go about our lives without them in it. We don’t have to share “this person who sucks said another thing that sucks.” We can have peace!

one of the reasons bluesky works differently is because early users waged a successful fight to get the devs to prioritize safety features to protect communities at risk as a result bluesky now has a suite of controls that i think are unmatched on social media here’s the list, lmk what i’ve missed
A Probably Incomplete List of Bluesky User Safety Mechanisms

Protecting your posts
• disabling replies on your posts
• limiting replies on your posts to people you follow, mention, or include in specific lists
• disabling quote posting on your posts
• detaching your post from someone else's quote
• changing the above interaction settings even after a post is sent hiding replies to your posts for yourself or for everyone
• self-labeling your media for adult or graphic content to protect other users
• limiting account visibility only to logged in users
• note: this is not 100% enforceable but all major bluesky clients and apps support it

Limiting your interaction
• blocking users from seeing or interacting with your posts
• if you block after an interaction, they vaporize
• if they've replied already, the entire thread below their reply is cauterized for everyone, floating in space detached from your post
• note: your blocks are publicly visible via 3rd party apps
• muting users to remove them from your notis and feeds, and hide them in replies
• note: your mutes are private
• muting or blocking entire moderation lists of users
• note: inclusion in a list is public via third party apps. muting a list is private, blocks via a list are public
• subscribing to other people's mod lists
• note: your subscription is private, muting & blocking work the same
• subscribing to labelers (moderation services) from bluesky or third parties
o decide whether to show, warn, or hide posts that have been labeled in each category
• report content that should be labeled to bluesky and/or third parties labelers

Has to be around 4th or 5th grade thanks to HP and Fushigi Yuugi fanfic (to this day, I still have no idea why at least one Filipino TV station thought that was appropriate for kids anime programming). If we're talking purely consuming stuff, has to be a bit earlier with Pokemon and Spice Girls.

I would update this to add how indoor spaces would likely get more investments, but they'd require ventilation and air conditioning to deal with the heat and that creates a feedback loop that could worsen climate change due to the higher use of greenhouse gases.
How will it affect fandom? Climate change can impact how people will spend their leisure time, with countries like the United States potentially an increase in outdoor activities due to more moderate and hot days (Willwerth et al., 2023). Meanwhile, countries below the equator like
Australia which experience extreme heat and flooding are now grappling with the risks of these impacts on players, sports spectators, officials, and infrastructure, challenging the sustainability of
outdoor activities and different sports leagues (Australasian Leisure Management, 2024). This will affect where and how people will spend will leisure time. Should we fail to keep the temperature within the 1.5 ℃ threshold, for example, we could see the following effects: Fandom activities becoming more centered on online/virtual spaces and platforms, due to
extreme heat affecting who gets to participate in outdoor or international events; Increased cost for fan events, to account for potable water demand, sun and heat protection, and insurance costs; and extreme heat, greater amounts of rainfall, flooding leading to decrease in use of open
outdoor spaces, potentially leading to governments deinvesting in public spaces.
