Do you know the story of La Classe américaine : Le Grand Détournement ? Aired just once on December 31, 1993, it is a dubbed mashup of the Warner Bros catalog that parodies Citizen Kane, John Wayne, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jimmy Stewart, and so many classic flims. A true […]

These two things in French do not mean the same thing: Tout le monde ne l’utilise pas. Personne ne l’utilise. Anglophones could be forgiven for being confused. This French lesson of the day brought to you by several independent comments in my streams and offline discussions.

the point here is to show that "explainable AI" is not a problem you solve just by choosing some magic performance metric, because the problem, as is the case for pretty much all data presentations, is about rhetoric, and what is persuasive and what is true are often only distant relations.

@khinsen @zackbatist interesting contrast. In my context, building is a necessary and intrinsic means to learning. Is learning a means to building or just intrinsic to open source projects? 🤔

@zackbatist @khinsen in my corner of the world (which happens to be a French grande école in computer science/human-computer interaction, but I wouldn’t extrapolate too much from that), PhD students and postdocs tend to carve out their own niche within the research context and vision of their […]

@zackbatist @khinsen good point. I’m using these titles as shorthand for roles. A PhD student is a sort of drive-by contributor to a project. A postdoc is similar but with more experience but a shorter duration. A research engineer might be a longer-term contributor, while the […]

@khinsen @zackbatist how does that categorization of “regular contributors, developers, and maintainers” translate into “PhD students, postdocs, research engineers, and PIs/enseignant-chercheurs?” Besides the obvious 3≠4, there seems to be a certain rough symmetry.
