Happy Sunday! Here's a site I've built because I've been thinking about this and want to see more of it in the world: a space for describing and sharing scholarly skills that I've picked up and nurtured over the years. Also this is a no AI zone in at least two ways: no talking about it and no […]

If we want to regulate AI, why not start with a simple ban on LLMs using "I"? Easy to build, easy to verify and deflates a hype while still allowing people to use chatbots (so no one can claim we are limiting anything) My latest for @volkskrant in English! […]

Lots of ongoing talk about "superintelligence", AI consciousness/feelings, and the like, so I figured it would be worth giving this another round. The AI industry is going to keep pushing its crappy narratives, but we don't have to do their work for them. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/techno...

Can someone explain this to me in simple terms? You have AI company experts saying "We expect to cause some kind of catastrophe next year." Whatever happened to Lloyds of London? Do these Masters of the Universe have insurance? www.axios.com/2026/10/09/a...
What we're watching: Many AI industry insiders told Axios they believe a major event will occur in the next six to 12 months.

Even with Democrats in control of the House and Senate, the companies see fractured politics as the norm, including within the Democratic Party.
Some of the most heavy-handed Democratic proposals include banning superintelligence or pausing advanced AI development.
Others have bipartisan support and even some industry buy-in, including a required kill switch on advanced AI. But experts have questioned the viability of trying to turn off all AI systems.
The bottom line: In a real crisis, Washington can set partisan differences aside. One Democratic aide pointed to cooperation during COVID and the 2008 financial crisis.

Anthropic could've said that they adopted this policy because they feel it is not helpful to individuals to allow them to play out abusive behaviour even when interacting with a machine. That would've been fine. But with this wording they want to sustain a fantasy. www.anthropic.com/news/2026-us...

Lecture notes on "The Source Code of Science", by Roberto di Cosmo. hal.science/hal-05734828 Its ource code: github.com/rdicosmo/source-code-of-…
hal.science
The Source Code of Science
Research software is not data, and the FAIR principles — designed for data — do not carry over to it unchanged. These doctoral course notes take software as a first-class research output and work through what it takes to archive it, reference it precisely, and reproduce the results built on it. They introduce Software Heritage, the universal archive of source code, and the SWHID (ISO/IEC 18670) intrinsic identifier that names any source-code artefact by a cryptographic hash of its content. From there they build up software citation with the biblatex-software style, the qualified identifiers that pin an exact version, module or line range in context, and the practical workflows — Save Code Now, self-archival, artefact evaluation — that let a paper point at code that will still be there, and still be the same, years later. Written for PhD students and researchers across disciplines, suitable for self-study or taught delivery.
