Cambridge professor remains in post despite plagiarism
History academic published an article containing large parts of essays copied from one of his students

*this para is important. William O'Reilly, history don, was found to have plagiarised by the university, and has had sexual misconduct claims against him as well — but he remains in post at Cambridge, and the press/public barely noticed.
Allegations of plagiarism in a doctoral thesis do not usually make for riveting, front-page news. Indeed, in 2023, when the Cambridge history professor William O’Reilly faced allegations of plagiarising student essays, the press coverage consisted of barely half a dozen articles (a tribunal ruled the plagiarism was “the product of negligent acts but was not deliberate”). Few people could care less about what academics get up to.

But Arday could not expect to be similarly insulated by academia’s remoteness. This story has endured, stubbornly, because it is so perfectly calibrated for some of the most combustible charges of Britain’s culture wars: namely, that academic standards have been surrendered to a woke orthodoxy, and that minorities are unfairly advanced in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The Cambridge academic has rightly now resigned. But that won’t end the targeting of senior black figures or the lazy way institutions promote faux equality, says Guardian columnist Jason Okundaye

The stakes surrounding the “Sullivan Review” are high, @jaytoddgla.bsky.social and I argue in @tibg.bsky.social rgs-ibg.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
4 Conclusions: Beware of Calls for Clarity

The stakes surrounding the 'Sullivan Review' are high given the worsening eliminationist movement against trans and gender diverse people in the United Kingdom and internationally (e.g., Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention 2023, 2025a, 2025b, 2025c). The Review adds ballast to attempts to embed a certain conception of biological sex and to separate sex and gender, which it presents as unquestionable science and
'ordinary mainstream views' (SR2, 32). It (re)installs ideologically driven models of sex and a hygienically patrolled division between
'sex' and 'gender', where a certain model of sex is 'reality', and 'gender identity' is cast merely as an individual's (psychological) 'self-understanding'—a model that research across disciplines has done much to dislodge (Hemmings 2022; Sothern and Dyck 2009).
How the Review does so undermines and discredits critical scholarship that researches the intersectional complexity and instability of social categories.
