I honestly took it more as genuine compliments for how well we kept it together and didn't concede-- we had to travel down there, under pressure a lot, last ditch blocks, Herrera made a heroic save, we'll definitely take our hard-earned point in that match, like he was impressed with our club #DCTID

This was a really good essay. The one thing maybe I would add is how jarring the tower is to Jackson Park; it was like a kind of calm oasis, and now this monument to one man kind of dominates everything. The Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids is the gold standard as far as I'm concerned.

Well this reply to the version 4 objection seems right for sure (and I wasn't objecting to your thesis!), I was just trying to get some free education through the "method of naive questions" 😁. I am kind of interested in this now, so I will def. check out the other objections, etc. Thank you!

I think if you read Kierkegaard as a response to/in the context of Hegel it helps (rather than some like supposed completely standalone system of existentialism or whatever). Here is an interesting talk: youtu.be/Vf47X0NK6OE?...

Well for sure not, as for example, I found out from you that not everyone in your field even accepts or relies on it. So great "assumption" is fine, it is an assumption that I can't quite believe or accept anyway (and ergo what follows from it). Thank you!

david @dxbx.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Oh, I just meant in the sense of "we assume a for theory T" but I can see how that can look argumentative (like you are saying a can't be supported beyond mere assumption (like the principle of non-contradiction or something)

Prof. van Rooij was like: yeah, you are going to have to actually read😂). So I was for sure mixing up a lot of stuff, main issue seems to be the computability analogy axiom (but that is supported by the idea that the functions are not definable analytically). Will check out heuristic info thx 3/3

david @dxbx.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
I asked what a "cognitive function" was meant to mean and Prof. van Rooij helpfully gave me some stuff to read about that, and I said I doubted a function in the proper sense could even be defined for human thought, etc. (I read mostly logical empiricism way back when lol) 2/

david @dxbx.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
On the thread about the new tractability paper and Prof. van Rooij asked for questions, I asked about "A common assumption in cognitive psychology—and one that we will adopt in this article—is that a cognitive capacity involves the effective computation of a specific input/output function ψ" 0/

Hi Prof. Guest; I asked Prof. van Rooij about this other day (bsky=free office hours lol)came away thinking that this is the fundamental cogsci axiom. It seems false to me (it is like saying photosynthesis is a form of computation) so I was like "so much for cogsci" but it isn't necessary after all?
110
david @dxbx.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Ah, okay, thanks! I'm pretty skeptical then of the cogsci project-- it seems like an analogy (a mind is like a computer) that leads to the further input/output function analogy. If you actually tried to define one of these functions for a human, I'm not sure it is definable let alone computable.

david @dxbx.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Hi Prof. van Rooij! My question is if wonder about "Assuming cognition is (explainable as) a form of computation"-- sorry to ask an elementary cogsci question here (as I really don't know a lot about it 😅) but what is the definition of "cognition" or more precisely a "cognitive function"?

I wrote about this fact after the Spain shutout Something beautiful to me about a guy watching the 1986 World Cup, deciding he HAS to name his son after the guy who just scored a big goal, and then, 40 long years later, that kid becoming a star at the World Cup sports.beehiiv.com/p/today-in-s...
Vozinha means “granny” in Cape Verdean Creole, a nickname he got because kids used to make fun of him for going home to his grandparents when he got upset. His birth name is Josimar José Évora Dias, the first name coming from Josimar, a player who broke out and scored two goals at the 1986 World Cup, during which Vozinha was born.

His dad apparently initially tried to name him after Jorge Valdano, who scored two goals for Argentina on June 2, 1986 — and Vozinha was born on June 3, 1986. But Cape Verdeans weren’t allowed to use non-Portuguese names, so it got rejected, and he replaced the name with a Brazilian who also shone at the 1986 World Cup.

And perhaps that’s the biggest way of explaining what Vozinha has just done. 40 years ago, a guy scored a goal in the World Cup, and it seemed so spectacular and important that the next day, a new father on a tiny island thousands of miles away proudly named his baby boy after the man from the TV. In 2026, Vozinha was that man doing something spectacular in the World Cup. Perhaps today, in maternity wards across the globe, there are little Vozinhas and Josimars being born as well.

The best bit is when Cavalli realizes there is absolutely no danger of Contreras actually being able to get to him an punch his lights out, he starts waving "yeah, come get me" which is these sort of "tough guys" in a nutshell
