I wanted to give my algebra 2 students something to do with complex numbers beyond computing, but not needing trig, e, etc. So I made this set of tasks to explore connections to geometric transformations. I think they got a lot out of it! #iteachmath #mtbos drive.google.com/file/d/1IMGt...

Finally got a few sets of @hpicciotto.bsky.social ‘s Lab Gear and introduced it in #MathsToday. You can do a lot more than with standard algebra tiles. Looking forward to trying the various explorations and activities to see what emerges. Does anyone else here use these? #iteachmath #mtbos

In algebra 2, we've been working on analyzing the term/factor structure of sub-expressions (using tree diagrams and parsing marks). Students are doing well! On Tuesday, we'll layer in the distributive property and how it supports transformation in either direction. #mtbos #iteachmath

I’m designing a workshop series (3 1-hour sessions) for 11th & 12th graders to show how to use @desmos.com for exploring, problem solving, and creating, not just graphing. I have ideas for what to prioritize but I’d love to hear what others would focus on in or do in that time. #mtbos #iteachmath

My 6 yo is always busy with projects. Currently, she is designing party hats for her dolls. I told her it was really impressive and she said “what? I’m just cutting out triangles, rolling them up, and taping them.” I asked her how she knew to do that and she said “I just saw it in my head.” #tmwyk

Y12 started graph transformations today, so to warm up we did these function notation completion table. I had a lot of fun constructing this task, especially making the second table so that as many cells as possible could be filled. #MathsToday #ALevelMaths
Two completion tables with rows for x, f(x) and then a variety of transformations of f(x). In the first table, the top two rows are filled in. In the second, the first row and various other cells are filled in. The task is to complete as much of the table as possible. Answers to the previous task. In the bottom row, one of the values has been changed to 66. Some cells are blank, because it’s not possible to fill them from the information given.

I was baking cupcakes with the 6 yo and (of course) did fraction work with her. I got out the 1, 1/2, and 1/4 cup measures and asked her questions about them, had her read the symbols, etc. I told her we needed 3/4 cup of sugar and asked her how we should do it.

Can you solve the puzzle? What goes in each blank of the area model?
A 2 row by 3 column array is shown. To the left of the array, a 2x is shown in row 1 and a 3 is shown in row 2. A 10x^3 is shown in the 1st row, 1st column cell. The rest of the cells and the 3 spaces above the first row all have question marks. Under the array, the total area is given as 10x^3 + 23x^2 – 4x – 24.

A revelation that hit me during my conversation w/ @pernille.bsky.social is the tension & pressure of training American teachers to be superheroes needed to rescue kids from failing economic systems while ignoring those systemic failures. The demand to be superhuman is ultimately dehumanizing.

What I don't understand is how the United States spends 154 hours on math instruction each year, 20hrs more than the international avg, & 40hrs more than high scoring EU countries like Finland & England. In fact, you'd think there was an inverse correlation between instructional time and outcome. 😵‍💫
Chart from TIMMS 2019 showing instructional time spent on math where the United States spends 154 hours per year, easily the top quartile, and about 20 hours above the international average2023 TIMMS league tables for avg math achievement: Singapore, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, England, then further down, US, Israel, Azerbaijan, etc.

The problems are simplified step by step. The text at the top reads "Addition has the lowest precedence in EMA, so it is done last. Find the value of each underlined chunk first, then add together."
