Grocery store prices in rural Alaska right now. Most goods here come by barge or plane, so life here has always cost more. But this? This is as bad as it's ever been. This is what the price-hiking war in Iran is costing Alaskans. Dan Sullivan has now voted for it 14 times.

A screen grab of a Washington Post article. The title is “Fort Hood shooters execution will live streamed, Defense Department says”.

The subheadline reads, “‘We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it,’ defense secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday about the firing squad execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan.”

Dated October 8 at 5:36 PM, 2026

The text is followed by a picture of Pete Hegseth grimly peering from behind a lecture podium. The caption of the picture is defense secretary Pete Hegseth on Oct. 6.” The photo is credited to Stephanie Scarbrough/AP.

I’m honored to be an alumnus of a university on this list: schools leading the way in expanding diversity of thought beyond our national borders. We limit ourselves and the our understanding of the world when we only consider American perspectives.

After the court is rebalanced (and it *must* be rebalanced somehow), the 60-vote approval margin for SCOTUS justices must be reinstated. We can’t have extremist justices. They should respect the constitution, the rule of law, and legal precedent except where it truly falls short of the constitution.

The cynical part of me is thinking that the only action the federal government will take on this NY Times piece is to end the IRS’s clawback attempt, but not before someone negotiates a kickback.
A news clipping that states:
“Meta is already in one sizable dispute with the IRS over this tax break, for using it to subsidize its chief executive’s multibillion-dollar pay package. In 2013, Meta claimed that $4.1 billion of stock options exercised by Mr. Zuckerberg counted as a research expense because he helped invent new software, such as Facebook‘s News Feed.” (The following portion of text is highlighted) “The IRS is trying to clawback the companies resulting $355 million in tax savings, court filings show.”

Yes, AND, the first thing Democrats should do is pass a law that says that the president can’t take money away from students based on their major. Watch Republicans squirm if they vote against that.

If you’re watching Fauci’s testimony remember that science isn’t an ideology. It doesn’t lie. It evolves. COVID-19 was a once-in-a-century pandemic caused by a brand-new virus, recommendations changed because the evidence changed. That’s not deception. That’s how it works.

This IS a 5-alarm fire. And—if this isn’t already clear from the debacles of Trump’s previous “Acting” appointments—legislation must be enacted to prevent acting political appointees from making substantive changes to their organizations. They should be caretakers, not political cudgels.

Is it even legal for Dhillon to represent Bondi while serving as AAG?
An excerpt of the New York Times article. The text reads:
“Democratic lawmakers questioned the unusual presence of Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, at Ms. Bondi's side, where she frequently intervened to advise Ms. Bondi not to answer questions.
Democrats have accused Ms. Dhillon of serving as an enforcer to ensure that Ms. Bondi did not
answer potentially damaging queries, but Ms. Dhillon has said she was appearing as Ms.
Bondi's private lawyer.” The final phrase of the excerpt is highlighted: “Ms. Dhillon has said she was appearing as Ms. Bondi's private lawyer.”

Pope Leo’s encyclical falls into this same vein for appealing to Catholics. Much of it falls into a sweet spot for Democratic politics in the present moment. Democrats would do well to capitalize on the messages there.
