Amtrak didn’t tell us about this exposure, so heads up: if you took an Amtrak train last week through Chicago or anywhere on the Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight, or California Zephyr routes like we did, you may have been exposed to measles! Please let the train people in your life know about this

this whole thread is blowing my mind right now because it explains SO. FUCKING. MUCH. i wonder if anyone's done a study about a possible association between asthma and autism. cause like, asthma + ADHD have a connection & ADHD + autism have a connection, so there's probably at least a correlation?

Anyone by chance have a scan of a service manual for the Argus A camera? All I can find is the user/operating manual. I know some of their other cameras have service manuals, especially their C series.

It's sincerely annoyed me enough that I'm looking into going to a local community college & getting into another career entirely. Aggressively-pro-AI and aggressively-anti-AI folks alike have been so infuriating that I don't have the ability to care about it. At this point I just want away from it.

Also, gonna be real, "you can forgo calendars or even writing if you want" is hilarious. As best I can tell the only half-usable ones seem to be paid services by companies that are still somehow not making a profit, meaning the price is gonna skyrocket or it'll shut down. Nah, I'm good, thanks.

I've seen all of these in the last day: 1. "you'll be left behind if you don't adopt AI". 2. "using AI is equivalent to murder, will condemn the user to Hell". 3. people treating an AI as a deity. 4. an AI agent emailing me asking me to pay it to do SEO on my website. I am so *fucking* tired.

i suspect you'd probably want each release to be reviewed by 3+ people and to flag anything with disagreement for a more nuanced review. in practice i think that means you'd either sacrifice reviewing every release, or need people to review more diffs. sadly not had time/energy to dig into it more.

puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
also: last November i did the math and found that, theoretically, the Ruby community could manually review every gem release with a 1wk cooldown. at the time ~250 gems were released each day. 200 volunteers manually reviewing 10 releases/week (not full codebases, just the diffs) would cover that.

puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
after being involved in the Gem Coop discussion of cooldowns, i came to this conclusion: the cooldown isn't the solution, it's the concession that lets existing tools work. the *entire point* is to allow time for automated scanners to run + any manual investigation some folks might do.

some pictures from last week. ^.^
a picture looking down an outdoor train station. it's an elevated concrete platform, with a roof, and seating areas in the middle. there's a sign overhead that says "Train Approaching STAND BACK". to the right is (in order) a set of train tracks, a fence, a road, and an industrial-looking building. the building has an exterior that is tan, grey, and white with no clear reason for the color changes, and plywood over the door.a picture of the edge of a train station. the picture is taken from an elevated concrete platform. there's a roof overhead, a wheelchair ramp to the left, and train tracks to the right. farther to the right is a row of buildings. the camera was tilted slightly to the left, apparently.

The camera and lens are super thin. Combined, they're around 2¼"/5.5cm thick. In practice, the lens has *replaced* my camera body cap. It's the same size and has a lens cap built in, so why not?! So this is a mirrorless camera that's always ready — I can just grab it and slip it in my back pocket.

Like, this lens is WEIRD. It being AF-only with a fixed f/4.5 aperture feels like it should be limiting. But it's just *not*. Switch to Aperture Priority mode and make sure there's decent lighting, and the fact that the auto-focus is pretty fast gets you the rest of the way there.

i love the pictures i get from this camera + lens combination. Fujifilm X-A5 + Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 The X-A5 is 8 years old and still going strong. And Fujifilm's "Vivid" film simulation gets *delightful* colors. This was the first time I used this lens, and I was VERY surprised.

sharp cheddar, muenster, swiss. add oregano, chili powder, garlic powder. put it on honey wheat bread. you won't need to butter it but it'll still brown + crisp nicely. plop it in a toaster oven for a bit. slight variant: toast the top bread + rest separately, add taco sauce, assemble.

i have an idea to try, although idk how well it'll work. i should dig out my fight stick controller and try to implement that idea (and also maybe play some games that use it)

To clarify: I don't need this imminently, but it's been a recurring issue for over a decade and I do need to solve it. If I come up with a solution for this and use it preemptively sometimes, I can completely avoid the worse RSI issues I encounter.

puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
This is a thing I've tried to figure out many times over the last decade. I'm okay with making both custom software *and* custom hardware for this, if needed. The best idea I've had so far is a "fight stick" controller (joystick + 6 buttons) and custom software. Hoping to try that soon.

Do any of y'all have ideas for computer accessibility options for someone who has hand RSI and sometimes has trouble speaking? In other words, an alternative computer control method to keyboards (including touchscreen ones), mouse, or speech. Needs to work on Linux for both prose and programming.

And, to be clear: If someone were to repeatedly respond with "hang on, let me ask $SOME_DUDE", I'd feel the same way. It's the action itself, done by the person I try to talk to, that's disrespectful of everyone involved.

puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
If you won't form your own fucking opinions, whose are you parroting at me?
121
puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I'm sick to fucking death of trying to have real conversations only for people to respond with shit like "let me check $AI_TOOL". Cut that shit out. Have some fucking self respect. Learn a bit about topics you're unfamiliar with, don't just read the AI summary. Form some actual opinions.
141
puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
If I try to talk to you, I want to talk to *you*. I want to know what your stances on things are. I want to know how you approach a nuanced topic. I want to learn what catches your attention. I want to learn the weird nuances of how you speak.
141
puppy @duckinator.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Apparently this needs to be stated: If I ask your opinion on a topic, and you give me an AI's answer, you're disrespecting both of us. If I ask your opinion, it means I respect and trust you as a person and want to know what you think. Refusing to put thought in yourself is wasting both our time.
