This is pretty funny considering that San Diego has the West Coast Navy HQ and also the largest Marines base by total personnel. Our big wet boy simply yearns for dead troops.

The funnier part is my wife is Turkish and grew up in Istanbul and didn't clock it until we showed the picture to her sister later who knew what happened immediately. She got sooo much teasing about turning into an American and forgetting her native language.

My wife and I spent an hour drinking beers by the Galeta Tower trying to figure this one out. (The answer is that the word for hair and clay differ only by the dotless vs dotted i and it's a common thing mechanical translations trip up on)

Prompting Claude "please refactor the API calls to use the v2 endpoint documentation has been added to the context you dumb piece of idiot robot shit" is certainly very weird behavior but it's not the same thing as calling a living human being a slur.

I think it's more that guy who is constantly pissed off and has a shitty attitude yells swears at the lathe because he has a shitty attitude and anger issues. Yelling at a lathe didn't cause that.

Electrocutions in a residential settings dropped something like 90% since GFCI became mandatory in building codes.

True but I think also this is a small minority of mostly recent converts. The majority who are chill and normal and don't proselytize at a friend's BBQ hang don't stick in people's memory.

I liked the season where they had some random old dude from New York on and he spent two episodes just kinda scowling at everyone and muttering and then died.

Those of us with computer jobs have always had a Joker/Batman sorta relationship with computer.

Why are naturalizations down? Are they just not processing paperwork? I wouldn't think it's because of less people being in the pipeline because you have to wait 3 years minimum with a GC before you can even file a N-400

My theory is that his entire life he's had a singleminded desire to be "Mr Noo Yawk City" and through sheer dumb headed persistence and being just charming enough he's still at it after 50 years. Plus media and electeds like him personally so he's always hanging around on the periphery being weird

The mark of a true NYC politics pervert is knowing all the Curtis Sliwa lore. Like everyone knows about the cats and beret but if someone tells you about his two children he has with the Queens DA via artificial insemination then you're dealing with a real sicko.

I'm guessing all the undecideds are actually Graham voters too embarrassed to tell a pollster they're actually gonna vote for the last guy's idiot sister that the state hacks gave the seat to in a backroom coronation.

Like that persistent myth that "salary" comes from Roman soldiers being paid in salt.

I interpret that not as AI boosterism but as JCO's undisguised disdain for romance novels. Which is exactly on brand for her. Lol if this is how people found out a 90 year old literature prof from Princeton is a bit of a snob about books.

I personally think Enterprise Computer is a great analogy for LLMs both in terms of the general nature of the tool (natural language knowledge processing machine for large unstructured data sets) and because everyone on the show treats it like a tool and not like there's A Little Guy in there.

WFH + Hybrid schedules and just generally covid causing people to realize that lots of non-recreational tasks don't need to be done in person. I can do a 20 checkin with my doc to renew/adjust medication on zoom and it's fine. Tons of activist meetings and planning is online now.

Although I guess this term is already something that exists in mathematics so probably not a good term.

I've been kinda using the term "stochastic programming" in my own head. Not in the coding harness sense but like, you give the model and goal and a bunch of data and then it goes and transforms that into something it thinks matches that goal. But it's not a deterministic process the way code is.

This is one of the main tourist stops in Cappadocia and it's very funny how literally everyone in the tourism trade will tell you a different and equally implausible story about why it's called "Love Valley" instead the glaringly obvious one.

They gotta stop by "Love Valley" to get that mojo back

Do they actually pay out subsidies on a per ride basis? Because if it's just a flat grant to help cover operating costs it might actually make the subsidy/ride go up on account of a smaller denominator.

I think there's certainly a non-zero number of "rescues" -- especially breed specific ones run by 1 or 2 people out of their home -- that are actually just high functioning animal hoarding.

Yeah I understand that there are lots of very sweet and not at all dangerous pitts but not everyone wants or is comfortable with having a pitbull or even just wants to roll the dice on "this shelter did the screening and assessment work correctly".

It is really telling how many of these international leaders are clamoring to do PR hits with Mamdani during the UNGA instead of our actual federal office holders.
