Here's a problem. Current tech darling Micron Technologies has seen its stock value increase by $370 billion—since July! For comparison, the ACA subsidies, which cost about $35 billion annually and Congress failed to extend, drove nearly 4 million people off coverage. National priorities.

In a new interview, Bill Gates speaks to the imminent dangers of unregulated AI that could easily result in mass death. He does not hold back. (Gift link to the full interview: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/o...)
So why is anything needed beyond — and is anything needed beyond? — the simply natural incentives under capitalism and normal corporate reputational management?

Well, I almost can't believe you're asking that. This is the most dangerous thing that humans have ever gone near.
In other areas, do we just say: Hey, release your drugs? There's no F.D.A., there's no airline safety board, there's no requirement that cars use seatbelts. Do we just use the liability laws to try and keep humans safe? You know: Oh, you're shipping opioids. Somebody should just sue you.
I mean, we've created a society that tries to keep people safe not by saying: Oh, we can bankrupt the person who does that. And you say there's filtering. There's no filtering. You can take an open-source model that can create bioweapons and disable any monitoring of any kind, and this exists today.
So no, there is no filtering of any kind.
And so say you kill 100 million people — you want to use a lawsuit?
I almost can't keep a straight face. And part of the reason I'm speaking so loudly — as loud as I can — is that you can't rely on the industry to self-regulate here. I mean, it's just insane.
The only question in my mind is: Do we wait until a cyberattack causes massive damage and a bioattack causes massive damage, and then the monitoring safeguards are required in these models to minimize the chance of that happening many, many more times? Or can we be wise enough to put these things in and require these things to be put in before millions of deaths?

One of the dangers of AI is the models’ capacity to social engineer humans. One possible outcome is that those humans (who usually don’t understand the tech) will then social engineer other humans. Through this process, we could see the spread of AI psychosis. (I think we’re seeing this already.)

"Trump’s pledge of a $1 trillion-plus payout for a Republican mid-term victory is adding to investor concerns about Washington’s fiscal discipline and erratic policymaking." Business Week Trump's $5k per adult is 4% of GDP, which would drive the deficit to 10% of GDP, 3x more than is sustainable.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari'io, which, appropriately, means "the lake is beautiful, the lake is big".
The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.
Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario - then, now and always.

Further on Carney's speech: It was full of careful bits of rhetoric like ones noted here. More powerful when spoken, w with carefully matched emphasis, than they might look on the page. All the more powerful for being so simple and direct. Plain, short words. "Ask not..." "I have a dream.."
Speech text:

We cannot accept what they have offered, and we will not give what they have asked.

In short, they asked too much and offered too little.

The new U.S. tariffs are designed to hurt and divide us.
They are a miscalculation, because Canadians will always take care of each other.

We are vacationing in our national parks. Buying Canadian products. Choosing Canadian.
Small acts of solidarity. Repeated millions of times that make a statement: we are the masters of our destiny.

Last spring, I warned that America is trying to break us so that they can own us.
And I promised: “That will never, ever happen.”

Canada is becoming stronger and less dependent on America.
We are already giving ourselves more than they can take away.
