Today is the feast of Frederick Douglass. His words still ring true and call us to a better Christianity. ⚓
"I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ; I therefore hatethe corrupt, slaveholding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial, and hypocritical Christianity of this land.
Indeed, I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity. I look upon it as the climax of all misnomers, the boldest of all frauds, and the grossest of all libels."

"In the name of God, what are you doing? Do you neither fear God, nor regard man?" In 1789 John Wesley directed these words at those who failed to help the poor. A lot of people are answering these questions today and it doesn't look great...

We have moved so far into the world of moral relativity that the mere fact some number of folks believes something makes it worthy of engagement. And I just think that's wrong. Some things are just right out. And we need to tell the folks we're in relationship so.

I'd like to see more writing on how the Musk/Trump junta feels like a frontal attack on the entire concept of virtue, in even the most traditional senses. They are actively demonizing and punishing everyone who doesn't worship Mammon.

Yup. @dianabutlerbass.bsky.social is saying what I’ve been saying for a while… they made our faith political.
I wish I had a nickel for every time a mainline church leader said to me, “We can’t do that.” Or, “politics doesn’t belong in the church.”

Dearest friends, guess what? YOU HAVE BEEN POLITICIZED.

You are now a target. For your good works of service. For your denominational stances on things like human rights. For welcoming those who have been marginalized. For caring about the poor.

Feeding hungry people? Political.
Preaching about mercy? Political.
Hosting a Spanish-speaking church service? Political.
Hiring a pastor of color? Political.
Having a woman preacher? Political.
Displaying a sign or a flag welcoming everyone? Political.
Believing that empathy and compassion are central to Christian faith? Political.
Loving your neighbor as yourself? Political.

YOU HAVE BEEN POLITICIZED.

Hi. If you’re a religious organization that uses federal funds to do your work, but are now frozen out of using those funds, feel free to drop me a DM or, more securely, a line over Signal (in bio). Same goes federal workers who work on/with religion, but are facing cuts.
