Sad news I've only just heard: Albert Derolez has left us. He was 91, and one of the foremost palaeographers and codicologists in the world.
Albert Derolez last year, holding his latest publication on the Liber Floridus, a Dutch popular science book.

Use particle-board citations and leave put load-bearing supports and whatever you build falls apart. If not under your own weight, than at the slightest push from outside. /end

This is a cliché of historians, that we write in footnotes but it really works this way. By analogy, citations aren't just a foundation, they are the principle building material, it's what you frame in the rooms with, and put under the floors, and seal up the roof with. /9

clue as to how well the paper would turn out. At one point I was explaining some citation problem I had found and a student asked 'wait, are you checking all our citations?' Me: yes, yes I am student: .... Me: This is as important as the stuff you actually write. /8

But with all of these cases, the person doing the citing has actually looked up the material or discloses in some way how, or to what extent, the source was used, or not. This was important enough when I taught that I told students that they could only cite what they actually looked at /6

It can get wooly when you are trying to cite new or obscure work. Citing unpublished conference papers is treacherous, and graduate work (of the BA Honours or MA level) if even worse, since many institutions don't retain them indefinitely (there are two MA dissertations .. /4

- to contain X or Y but were not directly used by the author happens, but that's not the sort of citation that is 'load bearing' in an argument. Similarly, making a citation that says 'A, quoting B' without having double-checked B, is done, but again, only when you can safely do so /3

There are, naturally, serious differences in the accepted practice of use and citation in different disciplines and the humanities are often the most pedantic about only citing what the author has personally consulted. Sometimes general citations to sources that are 'known' /2

Screenshot of Tumblr post by user sunshinemoonrx, reading:

‘Old Welsh lit: Dave punched Steve. This incurred a fine of twelve cattle and a nine-inch rod of silver and is known as one of the Three Mildly Annoying Blows of the Isle of Britain

Old Irish lit: Dave punched Steve so that the top of his skull came out of his chin, and gore flooded the house, and he drove his fists down the street performing his battle-feats so that the corpses were so numerous there was no room for them to fall down. It was like “the fox among the hens” and “the oncoming tide” and “that time Emily had eight drinks when we all know she should stop at six”

Old English lit: Dave, the hard man, the fierce man, the fist-man, gave Steve such a blow the like has not been seen since the feud between the Hylfings and the Wends. Thus it is rightly said that violence only begets more violence, unless of course it is particularly sicknasty. Amen.’
