Base of the Vatican Obelisk. Brought from Egypt to Rome by Caligula in 37 AD and erected in his Circus at the Vatican Hill. Sixtus V had it moved in 1586 to the front of the Basilica. Think of the effort in both those moves! The only obelisk never to fall since Roman times. #Rome #Photography

Mannerist fresco in the Musei Capitolini of Marcus Atilius Regulus, Consul in the 3rdC BC. He had a horrible death in Carthage, where he was kept in a dark dungeon with his eyelids cut off and was then dragged out and forced to look at the midday sun. May 2013. #Rome

Tip of the Agonalis obelisk, placed on the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini in 1651. The Earl of Arundel paid a deposit and attempted to ship its pieces to London in the late 1630s but Urban VIII stopped him. May 2013. #Rome #Photography

A great surprise in 2023 was seeing these superb colossi of Hercules and Dionysus. Excavated in 1724 in the Imperial Palace on the Palatine. They have been in the Palazzo Pilotta since the 1820s - when allegedly the then-fashionable sideburns were added to Hercules... #Rome #Parma #Photography

I feel strongly that Britain's premier Liberal Party is badly letting down this country. The leadership is focused on short-term electioneering (tax cuts, gimmicks, or pandering to particular groups). There are no extended arguments, no clear principles, few big ideas. It's deeply depressing.

Pretty shockingly bad work on the old bank on Sauchiehall Street. Aggressive sandblasting has wrecked surface areas of the stone (and not even got rid of the graffiti they were aiming at) and new holes in the granite for cheap brass numbers when the old bronze ones could have been used. #Glasgow

Doors Open Weekend in Glasgow has coincided with beautiful sunny autumn weather - I got the camera out, went into town, wandered aimlessly for an hour, cancelled tickets booked weeks ago & am off home to sit in a dark room and stare glumly at the wall for a while. My mental health's timing is 👌

Pope Julius III spent much of his five-year papacy, and much of the papal income, on building and decorating the Villa Giulia. His favourite, Innocenzo, was a youth he had picked up on the streets of Bologna when he was 14. When Julius became pope he immediately made Innocenzo - now 18 - a cardinal, to the great scandal of catholic Europe. This villa was built and decorated for their pleasure - which may be why there is a lot of boy-on-boy action going on in the surviving frescoes.
