Among teens in grades 8, 10 & 12, they reported that daily use has remained unchanged, despite a decline in the total number of users. What's really concerning is what happens right after high school: the number of young adults aged 19-30 reporting daily use reached a historic high at 11.8%.

in no small part related to the reduction in stress, effort and bandwidth that the tenure chase itself required.

I saw some comment about the whole Princeton tenure denial of Anne Carson that was basically "maybe she wasn't as good as she became back then". But y'know, that's true for a lot of Professors in all sorts of disciplines that accomplish more and more as their careers unfold.

When I was younger I used to believe that we should broadcast criminal executions. I believed that confronting the reality of doing it would make American's much less blood thirsty to support capital punishment. To make it a very high standard judicial action. Rarer. No longer do I so believe.

NEWS: NIH announced that 1,648 early-stage investigators were awarded extramural research grants in fiscal year 2026-the most ever recorded.
The agency also launched Generation Discovery, a new initiative to recruit 100 early-career Principal Investigators into NIH's Intramural Research Program.
NIH shared these and other recent accomplishments as part of the Golden Age of Science Summit, an event hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to highlight the administration's comprehensive rethinking of the U.S. science and technology enterprise, and to showcase significant areas ot progress.

https://bit.ly/3Vp3y4tThe Trump Administration places a high priority on increasing opportunities for early-stage investigators to receive funding support to test new ideas. NIH has found that the average age of an extramural researcher serving for the first time as a principal investigator on a R01-equivalent grant has climbed & in recent decades, from 38 years old in FY1995 to 42 in FY2025. The 1,648 R01-equivalent grants awarded to support early-stage investigators in FY2026 represented a 25% increase over the ten-year average of 1,323.
With NIH's Intramural Research Program (IRP), Generation Discovery is a concerted effort to connect talented early-career researchers with the unparalleled resources and research opportunities found within the IRP.
Beyond these two announcements, NIH highlighted several other initiatives and

Without warning or consultation, Congress just received an $810 million package of pocket rescissions from the Administration. This is the most recent attempt by this Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to undermine Congress's Constitutional power of the purse.
This move shows that OMB intentionally withheld these funds for months to execute this unlawful cancellation of appropriations that were approved on a bipartisan basis and signed into law.Not only is the delay itself an impoundment that was not reported to Congress, but also it is a usurpation of Congress's appropriations powers.
OMB is an agency of the executive branch. It does not get to decide which programs are worth funding.
The independent Government Accountability Office has concluded that pocket rescissions are unlawful and not permitted by the Impoundment Control Act. Any effort to rescind appropriated funds without congressional approval is a clear violation of the law.
I will work with my colleagues to address these illegal actions.
