Climateflation can sneak up on individuals and organizations. ❓Where are the vulnerabilities in your spheres of responsibility? #climateliteracy

Let's do more to share our effective messages and activities. I want people everywhere to be learning the same foundational language and concepts. That's how we create a broad, global, shared climate literacy (and conversation). 🙌

❌ So, don't ask: “Was this year worse than last year?” 💡 Instead, ask: “Does this observation change our understanding of the long-term trend?” Explore more climate literacy lessons like this from @engageclimatesci.bsky.social

Climate trends don't move in straight lines. Natural variability means individual years can fall above or below the long-term trajectory. That's why scientists don't evaluate a climate trend by asking whether every new year sets a record. Rather, they ask what the observations show across decades.

Context that matters: ➡️ The past 20 years are the 20 lowest Arctic sea-ice minima. ➡️ At its minimum, Arctic sea ice today covers only ~50% of the area it did in the 1980s. ➡️ The amount of thicker, older sea ice has declined by about 95%. Major, environment-altering transformations. 😳

Dr. Twila Moon @drtwilamoon.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Arctic sea ice reached its annual minimum this month, ranking 2026 as the 10th-lowest minimum in the satellite record. It's not the lowest, but that's also not the context that matters the most to understand today's sea ice reality.

➡️ REALITY: Arctic sea ice decline is not reversing. ❌ Myth: “Arctic sea ice was only the 10th-lowest this year, so maybe the decline is reversing.”
Text reads "Climate Reality: Arctic sea ice decline is not reversing". Photo of sea ice.

It was a joy to celebrate NSIDC's 50th anniversary yesterday. During tough times, gathering to see all the amazing insights, accomplishments, and connections that 50 years of meaningful hard work can produce was a lovely reminder of all that we have (+ need to protect). Congratulations, NSIDC! 🧊❄️💙

💡 Lesson: Match the scale of the climate information to your decision's scale. ❓ Don't just ask: “What does El Niño mean?” 🎯 Ask: “What does El Niño tell us at the scale and location relevant to the decision we're making, and what additional information do we need?”
112
Dr. Twila Moon @drtwilamoon.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
📐 Organizations make decisions at different scales than many climate signals, which deal with decades-long averages on global scales. A large-scale climate signal can tell you when probabilities are shifting while regional info helps determine what shifting probabilities mean for your decisions.

Dr. Twila Moon @drtwilamoon.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
A strong El Niño does not mean that every place will experience a predetermined set of conditions. It might increase the likelihood of wetter conditions in one region and drought in another. 💦 🌵
100
Dr. Twila Moon @drtwilamoon.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
🔎 That makes it a climate event that decision-makers need to pay attention to, but how are you meant to understand and interpret information about El Niño?
100
Dr. Twila Moon @drtwilamoon.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
🌐 First it was a "Super El Niño." Now, it's being called a "Godzilla-like" event. Whatever way you spin it, we’re in the midst of an exceptionally strong El Niño—a large-scale climate pattern in the tropical Pacific that can shift weather patterns around the world.

Op-ed by Dr. Twila Moon, deputy lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center @drtwilamoon.bsky.social on why the Arctic Report Card is so important and what's lost with NOAA's termination of support. #Arctic thehill.com/opinion/ener...
Our Arctic Report Card editor team and dedicated authors and supporters will do all we can to ensure critical, timely, integrated Arctic data still makes it to the decision makers, educators, and community leaders who need it. But without federal support, the task is harder, the data access systems built over two decades will go unused a trusted data source will become stale. This puts U.S. Arctic leadership at risk.

Colleagues looked for polar programs support in the NSF announced solicitations and found none. Ignoring the fastest changing parts of the planet doesn't stop the large, wide-ranging impacts. It just makes us less informed on when, how big, and what we can do to influence and prepare for them. 😵‍💫
