The surviving records of medieval murder offer a fascinating window into the lives of ordinary people, the communities they lived in, and how they understood and sought justice.

I am delighted to see Medieval Murder Maps included as a way to explore the world of late medieval crime and justice, alongside a mention of my forthcoming book, which follows the investigations of a coroner in medieval York, to examine how murder was investigated and justice viewed.

Public engagement needs more than a scheme that identifies researchers. It needs places for those researchers to actually be heard. This is real loss for public-facing scholarship and for Radio 4.

I’m incredibly grateful that I got the opportunity to do exactly that earlier this year. But if the BBC’s commitment to programmes like Free Thinking disappears, what happens to the next generation of New Generation Thinkers?
110
Dr Stephanie Brown @drstephaniebrown.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The scheme creates opportunities for early-career researchers to bring their work beyond the university and into public life. Free Thinking was a meaningful part of that: a space where researchers could pitch ideas, develop programmes, and reach audiences we cannot reach through academic publishing.

I’m deeply worried about what the end of Free Thinking means for the future of the BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers scheme.

It was a brilliant opportunity to bring historical criminology into a national conversation about how and why we punish. Very grateful to @drmatthewsweet.bsky.social and the whole team for making it happen.

My research looks at how ideas about gender, class, belonging, and justice have shaped the way women have been treated and understood. So being part of a programme that has spent 80 years talking about women’s lives, experiences, and concerns feels particularly special.

One of the things I love about being a historian on Woman’s Hour is that it gives me the chance to do what I enjoy most: take something from the past and ask what it can tell us about the world we live in now.

80 years of Woman’s Hour! 💕 I have been lucky enough to appear on the programme a few times to talk about my research into crime, justice and women’s lives — from medieval bloodshed to suicide and Victorian murder.

Derrière la tapisserie de Bayeux, les brodeuses effacées de l’Histoire

The two tapestries (medieval original and Victorian replica) allow us to ask who gets remembered as the maker of history, and whose work and experiences disappear behind the names of famous men.

Dr Stephanie Brown @drstephaniebrown.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
There is a fascinating contrast with the Victorian replica in Reading, where the 35 women who recreated it in the 1880s actually stitched their names into the border 🪡

Happy Bayeux Tapestry day!! 🧵 Although it is usually presented as a story of kings and conquest, the embroidery itself was almost certainly the product of skilled female labour

@drstephaniebrown.bsky.social's paper on the spatial politics of abortion was also brilliant, with the "retrospective policing" of domestic space reminiscent of Amy Bell's work on crime scene photos. Really useful for my own research on post-mortems in domestic space too. #c19

Hit me with excellent PhD theses. I am looking to compile a list for new PhD students to help them get an idea of what a PhD is/can be. Anything crime history - extra points if relating to violence and/or gender. Could be yours, your student, something you examined, or one you stumbled on
