Oh my god the tins in The Terror gave me such intense DREAD. The cartoon bear was awful - would have been far better left unseen as a sacred mystery, not for our eyes to see. But the TINS were genuinely terrifying.

Absolutely this film, but not this scene - and I can't bring myself to describe the actual scene, much less find an image. I tried to rewatch recently and had to give up, and yes cover my eyes and put my fingers in my ears at the most horrific moment.

Hey, I’m just asking questions. Ignorant questions, bigoted questions, questions that have been repeatedly answered for many years. Sorry, but I’m not listening to answers right now; I’m far too busy asking questions. It’s called being intellectually curious.

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

The underlying assumption is that budget allocations in universities are ideologically neutral: that institutional investment just goes to wherever lots of students choose to spend their time. But this is not how it works. Admin decide what forms of knowledge they want to incentivize.

I suspect that watching Pillion as an asexual person is a rather different movie, because I was wondering why that table seemed so heavy for 2 naked men to carry, and then I realised it was probably reinforced in some way to bear several bikers pounding on it. Specialist orgy furniture, or DIY?

If I was in charge of an educational institution and learned that a technology fostered “cognitive surrender” in young people, I’d like to think I would do everything in my power to keep it away from the young people who pay my institution to educate them. But I guess I’m just a weirdo.
Students are using artificial intelligence for everything, including cheating, and a recent M.I.T. report said the technology was creating
"cognitive surrender."

If anyone wants to read the 1890s stuff, a Dr called SAK Strahan was absoutely wild. I'm not saying representative, but still very illuminating to see the seething, hateful language directed at disabled people, their bodies, their sexuality, etc etc, in the name of 'science'.

Alex @drspider666.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Many I read were unscientific & contradictory but claimed to be scientific & rational. A kind of masturbatory slavering over the suffering of the 'unfit', making 'brave' statements about who doesn't deserve to live, and over commanding women's bodies. BUT I also found contemporaries saying WTF???
010
Alex @drspider666.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I study 19th century eugenics & this is the answer I reached there. Even in 1890s, people wrote that letting disease run riot = more disabled people, not fewer. But eugenicist writings seem to get off on *deciding lives unworthy of life*. And their other thrill: demanding ownership of uteruses.

It's always astonishing to me how effective "THEY don't get it, but YOU have the special insight and intelligence to get it" is at suckering people into cults. High achievers and strivers are easy marks precisely BECAUSE their achievement and high self-regard renders them susceptible to this line.
