Chosen family vs. biological family in disaster & emergency situations. The nature of "family" changes all the time through societal, cultural & economic shifts. But #DRR & #EmergencyManagement continue to stick to rigid definitions. Time for a rethink? My thoughts: lnkd.in/p/et-d4zwV
A photograph of an emergency shelter, with rows of camp beds made up with folded blue blankets and foil sheets, and a registration desk with printed notices behind. Overlaid on top is a large white form headed "NEXT OF KIN", with blank lines for Name, Relationship, Contact No and Address. The Relationship line has been heavily scribbled out in pen, and a handwritten annotation next to it reads "Unclear - needs clarification". The image has a thick red border.

Rest in power, Prof Arday
A LinkedIn post by Kevin Blanchard MSc FRGS. It expresses sadness and anger over the death of Professor Jason Arday, arguing that Arday was subjected to an unusually public “pile-on” rather than a fair academic misconduct process. The post says he became a symbol in debates about inclusion and DEI in higher education, deserved fair treatment and due process, and ends: “Rest in power, Prof Jason Arday.”

We're very happy to see @iom.int getting onboard with our #NoNaturalDisasters campaign. One by one the UN agencies are seeing sense. The full article can be found here: bit.ly/4fAAwGI
Screenshot of the mobile version of the IOM (UN Migration) website. The page header shows the IOM logo, a menu button, language options (EN and ES), and a blue “Donate” button. Below is a second navigation bar with menu and search icons. A banner image shows a disaster-affected street with damaged buildings and piles of debris. Three cut-out figures are overlaid: a person sweeping outside a building, a person standing in the middle of the road carrying a bag, and a large pile of twisted roofing and rubble in the foreground. Beneath the image is the headline, “Why we no longer talk about ‘natural disasters’”. The opening paragraph begins by explaining that language matters in the humanitarian sector because the words used to analyse risks, engage with governments and design projects shape how problems and solutions are understood. It argues that the term “natural disaster”, while common in everyday language, is technically inaccurate.

The Times responded to my analysis of their coverage of trans issues. They basically said "you can't look at what we wrote, you have to look at everything else!" But that belies the structural issues they won't even admit to such as pushing a Pullitzer campaign for Azeen Ghorayshi's podcast.
The Times rejects the criticism

In a statement to The Advocate, Rhoades Ha said the paper has “reported deeply for years on the prejudice and attacks that transgender people face” while also helping readers understand “the questions and debates over trans rights and medical care.”

“We reject any suggestion that our coverage is biased or anti-trans; we report on gender identity and related issues fully and fairly and approach our coverage with curiosity and sensitivity, as we do with every story,” Rhoades Ha said.

She said Caraballo’s analysis “shows a fundamental misunderstanding of our journalism and how it works,” arguing that such studies “sample words, sentences, and headlines in isolation and ignore the expertise, facts, and context that journalists and editors bring to each story.”

Rhoades Ha also disputed criticism that the Times fails to include transgender voices in its coverage.
