Played a bit of the FF Resonance demo last night and firstly, that game is gorgeous. But also really enjoyed the short time I’ve spent so far. I’m unfamiliar with BE, but it seems like they’ve done a good job reinventing the systems to feel nice and their own. No gatcha stink on it.

Haven’t been to the LCS in a couple weeks and really looking forward to picking the books I’ve missed up. Really been enjoying a lot of the stuff coming out right now. Zdarsky’s Avengers event has been a lot of fun and the Fraction Batman stuff has been excellent and Bad Seeds is cool.

I’ve also seen it with some of the takes about the new Wolverine game. People are complaining that the writers don’t “understand” Jean or some of the characters because they don’t act like they do in their favorite run or in their head even if the game itself firmly establishes them as their own

Yeah, I’ve said it before on here but it’s a really troubling trend I’ve noticed in what passes as criticism in a lot of spaces. They’re not engaging with the work itself but rather trying to do some comparative analysis with a version of the work (or character) that doesn’t actually exist.

You must examine the work itself! A meaningful analysis of the character must come from the text. A reading of the game where Jean doesn’t work cannot be based on another version of the character that does not exist in the work!

Preferring the comic characterization is fine, but the fact that the game’s characters are different is not inherently bad. I’ve seen multiple takes along the lines of “Jean is poorly written because she’s not written like she is in this run I like.” This doesn’t mean anything!

These characters are not those characters. The characters of this game are meaningfully distinct from the comics with their own backgrounds and motivations. Pointing this out is not criticism or even analysis. This is just identifying what the game is doing.

One of the weirdest criticisms I’ve seen about the Wolverine game is about how the characters are written. More specifically that they “don’t understand” the characters because they are different than their 616 counterparts. But what does that even mean?

Yknow, in retrospect, it was silly of me to buy into some of the cowboys hype. I just couldn’t fathom how the defense could be any worse than last year but somehow it is.

Honestly, still kinda excited for Wolverine. I do wonder if it truly will be a swan song for this style of game. Even though I still largely enjoy the design language in these types of games, I certainly would not miss it. There’s just infinitely more interesting things you can do in the space.

The problem with these movies is that they only take the aesthetics of its source material and nothing else. Comics are good because they have Something to Say and tend to do it an interesting way. These movies don’t and only exist for viewers to engage in a game of recognition.

I’m not really sure who the MCU is for anymore. Doomsday seems to simply be a film about going WHOA ITS THAT CHARACTER I LIKE! Do people even like that anymore? Like that was kinda cool for a bit I guess but it’s no longer a novel idea so it’s weird that it’s leaning into that again.
