#GoodMorning all. It would appear I've not posted here much of late in daylight. However, life goes on, the Sun shines, #coffee, strong & black, steams nearby. All may not be right with the world, but the general trajectory is good. Carry On!

Re-introducing a Hookland childhood nightmare/beloved icon. Mr. Lookout – the ghost bear mascot of the Hookland Tourist Board's 'I-See! series of books'. The scarrer of many a child's imaginations as depicted by @tomsbrown.bsky.social. #MrLookout #Hookland
A ghost bear. A big, fat ghost bear. Wearing spectacles, holding what appears to be a bone wand. Trust me, it is one scary bear. The text says: Mr. Lookout

Railway workers report the signal box at Lugford as haunted. Talk of a constant presence, of being scrutinised as they work. Talk of objects being moved, levers being pulled. Odd voices down the line. A place not haunted by dread, but by unwelcome intrusion. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Shockingly, perhaps, even before I get to my Monday night pub (usually solo) hangout, I have a post drafted for my @hookland.bsky.social 'goodnight' response. That doesn't make it any good, of course, but don't suggest that to the corn children. They can find offerings elsewhere!

Foxes In Love @foxes-in-love.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are sitting at a table, in front of a game board set up with several character figurines and various pieces of landscape terrain. On the table is also a measuring tape and a scattering of dice.
Green: Okay, that makes six. How many points did we need to dodge that strike?
Blue: Eight.
Green: Oof.

Both of the foxes look at the board pensively.
Blue: I guess that concludes the campaign. Another party wiped out in their first combat encounter.
Green: At this point we're just feeding adventurers to highwaymen.

"After he retired to the cave prayer grew in him like a forest, sowed its seeds inside his psyche, rewilded his heart. He didn’t see that centuries had passed without him."
A Saint looks up from his prayers to
discover he’s been dead for some time
For St Robert of Knaresborough
By Jay Hulme - from 'The Vanishing Song'

After he retired to the cave
prayer grew in him like a forest,
sowed its seeds inside his psyche,
rewilded his heart. He didn’t
see that centuries had passed
without him.
                              One day he
looked up, hearing requests for
intercession, and the woods were
older than expected, the riverbanks
shifted by the years —
                                              and as he
knelt before the altar in his hermit's
church, his knees disappeared below
the edges of his emptied grave.

We archaeologists tell the stories of the stones not to erase their mystery, not to undo their role as anchoring post for folklore, but to transmit the Long Neolithic. We give context for ghosts, provide new reasons for lithic pilgrimage. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday

#GoodMorning! Welcome Week continues, & I, suitably caffeinated, engage in holy loitering & random conversations with familiar staff & students, new & returning. Not yet trammelled by necessary routines, & with newcomers still willing to ask for & accept help, it's a very good time to be a Chaplain!
On a dark grey table sit a coffee cup, some flyers, a Pop-Up banner, proclaiming "Chaplain available for Chat", and a rather dapper hat of light green.

Even at the edge of Ashcourt's 'Water Warren', rumours clog the canal, turn it into a furred vein of trauma. People listen for the tinkling of Blackwater John's sinister necklace of bottled souls, talk of odd, unboated knocks at windows and doors of homes facing onto the cut. – #MattAdams, 1981
There’s a section of the canal in Ashcourt they call the ‘Water Warren’. All these Victorian wharfs and warehouses that are only accessible from boat tunnels, liquid alleys off of the main body of the canal or across walkways the bridge blocks.

Looking it up in the historical records tells you that it spent decades regarded as one of the worst rookeries in the city. Of course, being Hookland, it has attracted all this weird modern folklore and legend about it. Buildings no-one has been in since the 1920s, abandoned warehouses used by some iffy cult dedicated to who knows what. It is even meant to have its own cunning man – Blackwater John – said to be more than 90-years-old and who wears the souls of those he has caught in a necklace of small bottles.

I really want to explore it, but Trippy Pete won’t lend me a boat. Nor will anyone else. They all seem to buy into this superstitious miasma that clings to the Water Warren. They all talk of it being dangerous even by county standards. – from Matt Adams’ diary, 1981
