Completely agree. The shift in focus: STEM to STEAM (sci, tech, engineering, art & maths) education is vital for a successful holistic approach to global problems. For science to have impact it must be communicated. Art has the power to transform amrgraphicnovels.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2026/05/26/w...

One of these images I took using a wonderful transmission electron microscope in Leeds as part of my PhD research, stained with uranyl acetate. The other is a beautiful illustration of phage infection that features as a chapter in a graphic novel all about antimicrobial resistance #amr #microbiology
A black and white image of a hexagonal shaped head with a dark outer-shadow, and a faint long thin tail extending from the bottom about three times the length of the head. A brightly coloured illustration showing a green phage with an icosahedral head, a tail extending below the head and four legs at the base. A strand of DNA helix is shown entering into a cell.

Teaching #AMR and #WorldFoodSafetyDay is so important. One my favourite panels from the AMR Graphic Novels project is this one showing the sheer scale of meat production. The uniformity in the packages makes such a statement about consumerism. #GraphicNovels #ScienceComics #SciArt #Comics
Comic style illustration of a farmer stood next to an abundance of identically packaged meat products. The uniformity and vast number of meat packages demonstrates large scale food production. Farmer says; "The farming and food industry is so huge, this could have such a massive impact on antibiotic resistance".

Had to go and double-check our own work... 😌 Thankfully, yes, we had the same thoughts. All-caps and underlined text are generally best avoided for readability.
Comic-book style illustration, the character says 'Can you explain how microorganisms are evolving this resistance to our drugs and treatments?' - speech is written in sentence case in a comic sans font.

🚨New preprint and our results are rather concerning.. We find the "boiling frog" equivalent of AI use. Using large-scale RCTs, we provide *casual* evidence that AI assistance reduces persistence and hurts independent performance. And these effects emerge after just 10–15 minutes of AI use! 1/

Learning more about visual narrative grammar, we also became much more deliberate about the educational levers built into the AMR graphic novel. Readers need intrigue, cognitive scaffolding, and moments that stick. Visual setups that invite a question, pacing that nudges anticipation.
