Banning a #Pride display may feel minor, but remember: rights & #visibility are often eroded 1 small step at a time. Today's display. Tomorrow something else E.g. Italy, 2023: After political change, authorities banned recording both parents in same-sex couples & retrospectively amended birth certs

Reform says banning Pride displays from Norfolk libraries is about "neutrality". It isn't. Erasing LGBT+ visibility doesn't make people equal, it makes people invisible. I've written to Cllr David Bick calling on him to reverse this divisive decision. Love is love. 🏳️‍🌈
Reform's decision to ban Pride displays from Norfolk's libraries is shameful, divisive and deeply damaging.

Let's call this what it is. Dressing it up as "protecting children" or "family values" repeats the same tired homophobic and transphobic tropes that have been used for decades to marginalise LGBT+ people.

Libraries exist to inform, educate and welcome everyone. For many young people struggling to understand who they are, seeing a Pride display or finding an LGBT+ book can be the reassurance that they are not alone.

Removing that visibility doesn't protect children. It isolates them.

Pride displays also send a simple message to every visitor: everyone is welcome here. At a time when LGBT+ people continue to face unacceptable levels of abuse and hate crime, that message matters.

That's why I am writing to the Leader of Norfolk County Council, Cllr David Bick, calling on him to reverse this damaging decision.

Norfolk should be a county where everyone belongs.
Dear Councillor Bick,

I am writing to express my deep concern over the decision to prohibit Pride displays and Pride related exhibitions within Norfolk's libraries.

I urge you to reverse this decision.

Libraries are among our most trusted public institutions. They exist to educate, to inform and to ensure that everyone in our communities feels welcome. Pride displays are entirely consistent with that mission. They are not about promoting a political party or ideology. They are about recognising the existence of LGBT+ people within our communities and affirming that everyone deserves dignity, respect and equal treatment.

The justification offered for this policy, centred on "protecting children" and "family values", is particularly disappointing. These are phrases that have too often been used throughout history to stigmatise LGBT+ people rather than protect anyone. I do not believe they reflect the inclusive values that Norfolk should champion.

This decision also comes against the backdrop of rising hostility towards LGBT+ people across the United Kingdom. Home Office figures continue to show tens of thousands of hate crimes recorded each year on the basis of sexual orientation, while offences motivated by transgender identity have increased dramatically over the past decade. Behind every statistic is someone who has experienced abuse, intimidation or violence simply because of who they are.

In that context, visible signs that everyone is welcome matter enormously. Pride displays foster understanding, challenge prejudice and demonstrate that our public spaces are open to all. They encourage conversations that reduce ignorance rather than reinforce division.

They are also an important source of reassurance for young people who may be questioning their identity or sexuality. For some, a book, a display or a recommendation from a librarian can provide the confidence to understand themselves and the knowledge that they are not alone. Removing that visibility risk…
