The paradox of change cannot be dissolved cheaply (by definitions of categories). But the paradox of the heap (sorites) can be tamed (no pun intended) by an operationalist (engineering, relationship) attitude to what definitions are supposed to do for us: enable optimal interactions.

rigorous science or philosophy in this and related fields. I think we're much better served, in terms of facilitation of future research, by developing models of transformation and change (scaling, projection into new spaces, etc.) than by trying to define distinct categories.

phase transition somewhere that helps us make more progress. I'm not an absolutist about this by any means. But my experience has been that a lot of unquestioned ("obvious") categories evaporate into a spectrum once checked, and while fine for mundane everyday life, don't suffice as the basis for

that we care about (e.g., diverse cognition) and if someone proposes a sharp categorical difference, it's on them to specify how the discontinuity happens and show that we can't zoom in to find a spectrum in-between positions. Just to clarify further. I don't have an axiom that says there can't be bright lines. What I have is a heuristic that says that "phase transitions" and sharp categories shouldn't be an unquestioned null hypothesis. I propose that continuity should be the null hypothesis for many important things

New #preprint: led by @drpatricke.bsky.social An important step in our efforts to create tools for the community to accelerate discovery in diverse intelligence as relates to biomedicine and beyond: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/... "A platform for automated training of mammalian cell physiology"
biorxiv.org
A platform for automated training of mammalian cell physiology
Controlling cell physiology is difficult, not only because of cells' complexity, but also their capacity for real-time adaptation to interventions, leading to challenges such as drug resistance and transgene silencing. Accumulating evidence suggests that this adaptivity resembles classical forms of learning defined in behavioral science. However, a lack of appropriate platforms has led to gaps in our understanding of cells' capacity for adaptive problem-solving in physiological and transcriptional space. Here, we present a device, the Cell Trainer, capable of performing a wide variety of automated training experiments on non-neural mammalian cells, using timed drug pulses as the stimulus, and a mobile fluorescence microscope to capture images of responses, across replicate cultures. The Cell Trainer can operate in either an open-loop (feedforward) or closed-loop (feedback-controlled) mode, and our image analysis pipeline can report the behaviors of individual cells throughout each experiment and quantify population heterogeneity. We showcase the ability of the Cell Trainer to execute experimental protocols and perform single-cell analyses in both modes. We first demonstrate with a feedforward experiment in which myoblasts are repeatedly pulsed with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and their discrete calcium responses are analyzed, revealing sensitization-like dynamics. Next, we demonstrate a feedback control scheme wherein the fluorescence of a pH/voltage reporter in kidney cells is maintained below a threshold level with controlled pulses of acid. To accelerate research in the field of cell training, learning, and memory, we are openly sharing the Cell Trainer schematics and software with the research community. This platform provides a flexible tool for studying how cellular physiological states can be shaped by patterned stimulation and feedback control through approaches that work with the native adaptive competencies of cells. ### Competing Interest Statement This research was partially funded at Tufts under a Sponsored Research Agreement with Astonishing Labs. Possibly! It depends, we'd have to measure the degree of the cognitive glue, test whether the group knows things and has goals that the individual agents don't have, and perhaps even test various integration and causal emergence metrics (not sure anyone's done that already?).

outreach to other fields and to young people is important (thus my blog) but not more than the work. I can play with the balance a bit, but it won't shift off that basic premise. I don't want to spend even more time on things that aren't the research. But I'm definitely grateful for the interest!!

This is cool for sure, but there's a much more disruptive story brewing, which I've been developing over the last year or so. The entrypoint is systems (biological and computational) that exhibit sophisticated patterns of form, physiology, and behavior with *no* conventional story of their origin.
