A2 #lthechat good question, I suppose a benefit of strong TNE should be learning from each-other, sharing practice & resources etc. This requires building good relationships first

A1 #lthechat I'm not very familiar with TNE but including students is always a good bet, especially as effective means different things to different stakeholders

If you're actively researching while working in HE, but not within an academic discipline/school and/or beyond your remit, might you be a third space professional? As per Celia Whitchurch, Emily McIntosh, Diane Nutt, Natalia Veles etc

A5 #lthechat projects definitely, various collaborations across our unit, but not so much across units or depts personally, maybe because I'm still relatively new at my institution. I'd love to develop the research angle more and colleagues have certainly achieved lots on this already

Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Agreed, I like it, it does have its faults, but I prefer it to the other choices we currently have! Certainly bridges and an institutional perspective come up often as strengths of third space roles
010
Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
A4 #lthechat I like to think I do, but it varies even within our institution, for example, whether they are engaged in staff development would be a key differentiator

Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
A3 #lthechat yes, SFHEA and recently FSEDA. I think it's useful to undertake a structured process of reflection, it certainly helps with professional identity formation and developing your teaching philosophy
020
Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
A2 #lthechat Not very important- I think it's useful for people to understand who I am and what I do to help build networks and collaborate with others. I think that's often different to job titles and my identity is likely perceived differently by different depts/schools etc.

Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
A1 #lthechat my professional identity as an educational developer is more about the impact I can have than the job title. I identify more strongly with the term third space professional because I think it gives me more agency and helps me connect with others

Northern Ireland has a very high level of gender based violence, mainly committed by white Northern Irish men. I’ve yet to see riots after a woman has been violently attacked or killed. Seems like the issue isn’t qwhite about violence but who gets to commit it! www.ulster.ac.uk/research/res...

A6 #lthechat open access research methods training, introduction to diverse/ creative research methods, fair workloading, communities of practice supporting collaborative research. Also if you have a hierarchy then be transparent- what is a top journal for your discipline and who decides that?

A5 #lthechat lack of guidance- at DCU we give webinars on getting into SoTL, but does that happen in the disciplines or is it assumed to be tacit knowledge? Found my first publication experience confusing esp unclear expectations around image copyright (as a art history PhD candidate c.2015)

Lots of intersections to be explored between pracademic and third space professionals I think!

Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
Yes, amazing how REF in particular created this hierarchy, yet nowadays GenAI searches in particular mean that even pre-prints could have huge citation indexes, while some top journals have fallen victim to retractions
010
Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
A4 #lthechat hard to say- mentorship? Looking at the orcid of someone you aspire to? Diversifying research methods e.g. ethnography? Maybe looking to colleagues in the arts who have traditionally advocated for a more sophisticated understanding of what constitutes academic practice?
020
Dr Maeve O'Dwyer @drmaeve.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
A3 #lthechat I believe in broadly defining research- but I have heard people say "oh I'm not a proper researcher, I'm not published in top journals". I think it's imposter syndrome which stems from a supposed hierarchy of research - SoTL suffers from this
