Having a look at some work from my PhD on faults in Mongolia, and reminiscing on the beauty of this place. It's impossible to take a bad photo!
Mountains for days in Mongolia - lots of faults too.

Our school has an optional uniform, and I love it. About half the kids wear something that could be considered 'uniform' but it's totally flexible. My reception kid basically wears PE kit and the jumper. Esp for little kids comfort is key!

Composite plot of the two coseismic interferograms (Sentinel-1, from Copernicus) with the USGS epicenters of the two earthquakes and faults from GEM. The shoreline San Sebastián fault lines up with the fringes in the west and is probably the fault responsible.

Looks like the first mechanism from USGS might not be quite right - it's very different from GFZ (noted by @timwrightleeds.bsky.social in a different post)

⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.

This from 2021 looks really damn prescient today. “There have been many destructive earthquakes on this plate, particularly magnitude 7 and above around Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, in 1812 and 1900,”

The shaking for two events so close in time and space will be devastating. Not good.

Two large earthquakes in two minutes in Venezuela, with the second event much large at M7.5. This looks complex.

Not surprised that this is a NW-SE striking normal fault, possibly the Simav fault according to my Turkish colleague

Scary example of why scientists advise people to "drop cover hold" rather than "run outside" during strong shaking.

Possibly it ruptured towards the south which would put it closer to Bangkok (plus some directivity?)
