Unpaywalled link: archive.is/pIt05 I would guess the root of the Dartmouth situation is that the Provost was never writing those pieces himself, even before AI. He used staff to ghostwrite material for him; now his staff has turned to AI and he can't blame them without admitting the plagiarism.

Self-portrait at the age of 12, painting the portrait of her teacher Johannes Sulzer, 1691, by #AnnaWaser (Swiss, 1678-1714), who died #otd, Sept 20. Held by Kunsthaus Zurich, collection.kunsthaus.ch/en/collectio... #artherstory #womenartists
A painting of a young white skinned girl painting a miniature portrait on an easel. She wears a dress under a red skirt, with a patterned front, and a black collar and a close-fitting black cap that covers her ears and descends in a V in the middle of her forehead. Her right elbow is bent such that her hand, holding a paint brush, rises toward the work on the easel (she's painting a bust-length portrait of a man). Her left elbow is bent so that she can easily reach the palette she holds with her left hand (only her thumb is visible, through the hole in the palette). Her left hand also holds a clutch of 4 or 5 brushes. In the upper right corner is a coat of arms. Under it, in gold paint, is the artist's signature, which reads, "Durch An(n)a Waser v(on) Zürich / im 12. Jar ihres Alters gemalt / Anno 1691."

There’s of course the annoying part of this but there’s also the interesting Metascience. If you’re consuming the time it takes for 100-300 postdocs to apply, perhaps a half day or day per application, you’re consuming upwards of a year of postdoc funding just to run the search.

is also changing. But here's what happens if we don't start with what we value and instead start with what AI can and can't do: Students can tell, and they won't find the work meaningful. If we know what the meaningful work is, we can find the ways to do it, even now. /2

Here's what I like about this: Instead of answering the question, what should we do about AI, these outcomes answer the question, what do we want our students to be able to do? Yes, implementation has new challenges now because of AI. And in some fields, what we want our students to be able to do/1
