I had some thoughts about the argument “A Child or Young Person could come in contact with this media and be harmed so it shouldn’t exist!” TLDR; Children are SURROUNDED by things that could harm, scare or even kill them every day but the vast majority manage to be okay by being properly educated

But suddenly when fictional media is brought into the mix, suddenly not even adults have agency or can tell right from wrong. All this panic demonstrates is that there is a great need for education in emotional intelligence, communication, psychology and behavior, because problems relating to abuse, ulterior motives, and other forms of harm exist outside of that media; banning mediums through with people safely express themselves and explore numerous topics doesn’t magically make abuse stop, or go away. In fact such banning has historically been used to keep people IN abusive situations because they’re not allowed to explore or even question the way things are, and women, LGBTQIA+ people and survivors of sexual abuse are always the first on the chopping block:

• Kitchen Knives
• The Stove (Burning, starting fires)
•Medications
•Cleaning Supplies
•Hot Water from the faucet
•Boiling Water for cooking or drinking (coffee)
• Tools (Gardening Tools, Power Tools)
•Heavy Machinery (Cars, Garage Doors, 4-wheelers, Snow mobiles, Boats, Jet skis, Motor Bikes)
•Traffic
•Gas & Electrical implements
•Electric cords
•Stairs
• Animals (Random stray dogs, Wild animals, huge farm animals & horses)
•Ladders
•Pools & bodies of Water (risk of drowning)
•Alcohol (Wine, Beer, etc.)
•Sports (Injuries (even using ballet point shoes before a kid’s ready can fuck up their feet))
•Heights (Balconies)
•Ice (falling injuries; risk of drowning)
•Natural areas and hiking areas (Danger of rocky areas, Falls)

We aim to develop wider audiences for, and deeper understanding of, innovative, multi-cultural writing by essential participants in this conversation. At the same time, we undertake to enhance the reading experience itself by publishing and distributing gorgeously designed and produced books.
If adherence to our principles means that we will be ineligible for NEA grants going forward, so be it.
Compliance with the new regulations would be immoral.
