Swells from Isaias are affecting the western and northern portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and will spread northward toward the Gulf Coast on Friday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Be sure to check the conditions for your area at weather.gov.
A regional coastal risk map centered on the Southeastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico. A red hurricane icon labeled "Isaias" is located in the Gulf of Mexico near $25^\circ\text{N}, 89^\circ\text{W}$. Highlighted Coastal Risks: High Risk (Red): Extends along the Florida Panhandle coastline toward Mobile Bay, and along the East Coast from East-Central Florida up through coastal Georgia. Moderate Risk (Yellow): Stretches along South Florida near Miami, Southwest Florida below Tampa, and the South Carolina coast. Low/No Data (Grey/White): Covers coastal Louisiana and Mississippi.

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

I made an 80s power ballad about Kelvin waves, El Niño and sea level. 🎸🌊 Every visual is real NOAA tide-gauge data from San Diego. Hoping this helps explain why this happens, what we have seen historically, and what might be in store for this year.

Heading out to the beach today? ⛱️ Use extra caution given the Moderate to High rip current risk from Florida to Maine today (October 2). Try to find a beach with lifeguards - and when in doubt, don't go out! weather.gov/safety
Map showing the Rip Current Risk, today (October 2) across the southeast and eastern U.S. The map shows Moderate to High Risk of rip currents from Florida to Maine. Rip Currents: Know Your Options. Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer away from shore. If at all possible, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current: 1) Relax, rip currents don't pull you under. 2) Don't swim against the current. 3) Swim out of the current, then to shore. 4) If you can't escape, float or tread water. 5) If you need help, yell or wave for assistance. The image shows a rip current as a narrow flow of water moving in a line directly away from the beach, with waves on either side moving in the opposite direction towards the beach. Arrows point away from either side of the current and into the waves, parallel to the beach, indicating the path of escape from the rip current.

Swells and high surf from Imelda are expected to produce dangerous marine conditions and rip currents along much of the East Coast of the United States during the next several days.

Rip currents can sweep even the strongest swimmer away from shore. If at all possible, stay near a lifeguard while swimming. Learn more at: weather.gov/beach
Ocean waves are shown breaking offshore with text: Caught in a Rip Current? Here’s How to Survive. Relax, stay calm and float to conserve energy; Swim out of the current by following the shoreline or breaking waves, then at an angle toward the beach; Avoid swimming directly against the current; If you can’t reach shore, yell or wave for help.

Swimming without a lifeguard increases your chance of drowning, but not all beaches have lifeguards. If you’re visiting a beach without a lifeguard, follow these tips to swim safely, and remember, when in doubt, don’t go out. weather.gov/beach 🏖️
Designate a water watcher who can call 9-1-1
Adhere to all posted signs
Keep children within arms reach
Only enter the water if you can swim safely
Take a flotation device with a leash

NOAA is hemorrhaging personnel, NWS offices are short-staffed by as much as 60%, workers are living in fear of losing their jobs, afraid of political retribution for speaking out, and they think gaslighting the entire weather community is an effective PR strategy? There is no joy in Mudville.

What is a King Tide?
A King Tide is a popular, non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides that occur during a new or full moon.
