The most adorable baby king #crab, accidentally collected by NOAA researchers in the Gulf of Mexico, has become an instant online sensation. Collected by a research boat while scientists were collecting coral samples, the tiny stowaway is suspected to be a juvenile Neolithodes agassizii. #CrabSky

A pink and white adult king crab Neolithodes agassizii, a major predator at Gulf of Mexico cold seeps. (NOAA)

"As if king crablets aren't cute enough already, some are known to take rides on pudgy little sea pigs (Scotoplanes).

That's because their habitat includes vast, muddy plains that provide little obstacles to hide behind, so the vulnerable baby crustaceans have resorted to using other animals for shelter instead.

Sea pigs provide the perfect cover. As harmless scavengers, these translucent creatures spend their days languidly snuffling their way across the sea floor for tasty bits of dead animals, poop, and mucus to devour.

In 2016, researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute checked out about 2,600 sea cucumbers and found almost a quarter of them were playing mount to the juvenile king crab, Neolithodes diomedeae."

"King crabs are just one of many non-related species that have arrived at a crab shape, thanks to similar selection pressures molding their evolution. This phenomenon is called convergent evolution, where the same trait can develop in species that aren't related.

It has happened so often with crab shapes it's been named carcinization.

King crabs evolved from hermit crabs, and lost the need for a shell home up to 25 million years ago.

Unlike true crabs that have eight walking legs, king crabs only have six legs for walking. They also have a large attacking claw and and a smaller feeding claw up front, as the baby king crab so obligingly displays while sitting pink and pretty on a giant alien's purple glove."

Some days the hypocrisy about the good ol’ days of Iowa agriculture is a bit much, thank goodness cropaganda hasn’t erased all evidence! These Darling cartoons, from the 1933 Report on the Iowa 25 Year Conservation Plan, show that the extractive nature of Iowa ag was evident then as it is now.

J N Darling cartoon of an Iowa River before settlement and after - the top part shows clean water flowing and trees and grasses, the bottom part shows a river as a city sewer with no vegetation, with lots of industrial water pollution getting in the water.

J N Darling cartoon of soil erosion from Iowa - a huge erosion trucking cart company driven by horses dumps one million mile of the richest top soil in the world, aided by old man deforestation, into the gulf of Mexico while the US flood commission (a bunch of Army Corps of Engineers staff by the looks of it) stands by.

J N Darling cartoon of blind deforestantion and drainage of lakes and marshjes depicted as two giants pouring water into a landscape flooded while while on the landscape of the Mississippi Valley at the bottom a guy runs away eith money and another pours money into a flooded town with denuded forest areas in the background.

J N Darling cartoon showing rich people fishing - all kitted up nicely - in the top portion, and a dad and kid walking by the river bank with fishing poles "good fishing should be available for everyone in iowa".

Among Giants: A Brief Hydrological History of the Upper Midwest: streets.mn/2024/12/20/among-giants-…

Sometimes trivia is just that: trivial.

Some other times, though, it cracks the world open a bit, into something a little less disenchanted.

Such is this trinket about my local stretch of the Mississippi River as it bends its way through St. Paul, and the giant from which it emerged.

As you might notice upon visiting the Twin Cities, the Mississippi’s valley can be rather narrow or strangely wide, depending on the part of town.
(An informal survey of friends and colleagues revealed this is, in fact, quite often not noticed.)

To understand why, you might first look north and West, to the Red River Valley along the North Dakota border.

The Red River flows north into Canada and, eventually, Hudson Bay, but “valley” is a real misnomer; locals
believably claim this to be the flattest place on earth.

You also need to look to the past.

Driving through the Red River Valley feels akin to being at sea, the earth and sky stretching to their fullest in all directions.*

This is not entirely a coincidence; the land here is flat because it was once the bottom of a vast, shallow, ancient lake, Lake Agassiz, formed by melting glaciers.

(*Or it feels depressingly dull. Mileage may vary)

Among Giants: A Brief Hydrological History of the Upper Midwest by Rick Bohannon streets.mn/2024/12/20/a...

This illustration explains the geologic history of the River Warren Falls and how it evolved into the present-day St. Anthony Falls and Minnehaha Falls in Minnesota. It visually captures the process of erosion and retreat, showing the dynamic interplay between the sandstone and limestone bedrock, and how this influenced the falls’ movement upstream over thousands of years.

Looks to me like the beard starts more or less where the mouth ends at rest. Who knows how it looked in adults but that’s the direction I took. Means it lacks the proud chin beard but I imagine that might be troublesome with feeding anyway (not that animals don’t inconvenience themselves to be sexy)
