In retrospect I think it's a good thing that I entered into the specfic community in my 30s, because it offers a gregarious milieu with conventions, and the ability to bulk-load on social connection for three full days before going back and introverting the fuck out for a month or two. Works for me!

So that critique is really an unfair jab at 'pulpy' genres, but pulp genres regularly produce surprising great art precisely because they're open to experimentation. That said, I think there is a real divide here between what we might call 'expressive art' and 'functional art.'

Do you think it's gotten harder for joke versions of the news to be funny? Feel like between the world getting both darker and stranger it's tough. Like a lot of the classic joke news media comes out of the 90s, which was in my lifetime the peak of political apathy.

A ghost bear. A big, fat ghost bear. Wearing spectacles, holding what appears to be a bone wand. Trust me, it is one scary bear. The text says: Mr. Lookout

I feel the need to note that the Romans don't really present 'power' (potentia, vis) as their chief virtue. Instead, the Romans were "always harping on fides ['faith, trust']" (Dioc. Sic. 23.1); Cicero gives the virtue where Rome surpasses others as pietas (piety, Cic. Har. resp. 9.19).

One of my main mental buoys right now as ai eats the world is Bea Wolf 2. I don't think I can write any better than that, and it was hard, and every time I see a book get withdrawn (for secretly being ai) after winning many awards I think of the ballad of John Henry racing the steam drill*.
