This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Yeah there is a “teaching writing” problem at the collegiate level. Schools (college and HS) mistake volume for intellectual challenge but also conflate “use the textbook and teach yourself” with challenge. Made worse when the HS writing is test-centric, gamed out.

Some already do, at least for some tests I think. I was sharing credit policies for some universities with my classes. Lots of schools not giving credit for AP English Lang. The class is the transcript booster, but no credit…

Important classroom decor. Only effective use of a Faulkner portrait, IMO
A black and white photo of William Faulkner, adorned with googly eyes,
next to a bright pink sign that says “William Faulkner says fill out anhall pass.” Posted in a high school classroom

Here's how I know at least one part of this is not true: Before AI, students struggled to understand what constituted plagiarism. With AI, even the pros are debating our definitions of plagiarism. We need to talk about it more, not less. They don't know.

As we evolve a series of readings: what would ____ say to this new author (where ____ is one of our prior authors). So we read Emerson’s “nature” and “Self Reliance” and then a passage from David Brooks’ “On Paradise Drive”— what would Emerson say to Brooks?

Another difference is who is directing the violence.
Once, universities saw their computational power exploited by researchers working for the Department of Defense. Today, universities are being infiltrated by a commercial industry (albeit one that receives a staggering amount of money from defense contracts) that exploits students and faculty as data mines, test subjects, and a perpetual supply depot of future users, all for their own profit.
