hey friends, to celebrate #blocktober i have made a longform tutorial for ProBuilder in Unity it's a tool i've used for blockout a LOT over the last 5 years and have found other 'over the shoulder' style tutorial vids helpful myself, so maybe this will help some budding #leveldesign'er :)

Oh lol this was intended as a gag about Slug & Lettuce being a dated artefact of the late 00s but I've since discovered they're still alive and well outside the big smoke

Weekend done, time to hang it up. Many rough edges, but I'm still having fun. Going to completely rewrite the weapon grab mechanic. It's surprising how enjoyable an NPC with a basic (random attack + walk direction) type brain can be. Oh. I added an 808 kick to the Kill Confirm. #CherubDev #UE5

Yeah i mean for FPS Argonaut got the scheme right technically but Bungie really refined the feel. Y2K era Bungie were on another level maaaan! 🙌

GTA III (and VC) definitely don't have an orbital camera on the right stick, those i tested. Right stick puts you in first person mode 😵 Oni on the other hand - you're right, both movement and camera controls default to exactly what a modern gamer would expect. And that was a Jan 2001 release!

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Alien Resurrection meanwhile launched at a time when all new PS1s were being sold with a DS1 controller and the game defaulted to the dual-stick scheme when a DS1 was detected. They did a GREAT video about this on The Video Game History Foundation YT channel - highly recommend checking it out! [2]

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Yes i remember using it - very ahead of its time. But alas, it was so buried behind additional hardware and menus, few people ever actually experienced it and it was far from the default. [1]

Ah fair - though actually i suppose SotC isn't really in contention for being the "first" anyway as it didn't release until 2005. Anyway we have a new front-runner: Max Payne console ports shipped in Dec 2001 and they're bang on!

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
BINGO! We have a new front-runner! I'm facepalming hard as Max Payne didn't occur to me because I've perceived it as a "PC game" but you're right, it released on console in Dec 2001 beating Splinter Cell by nearly a year! 👏 It does invert Y by default (forgivable) but has an option to flip it!

Oh holy moly that's a great shout. Imma go check this!

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Splinter Cell manages to feel modern to the modern gamer as a byproduct of its axis calibration system in the tutorial, which makes it the earliest i was able to find in my testing... But there may be another!

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
In practice these games are very frustrating to acclimatise to, and remapping using emulation immediately fixes the issues - which proves the point of how important non-inversion of the camera x-axis is, despite being seemingly trivial on paper

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Feels extremely dated and off in practice in the modern era. Jak & Daxter, Mario Sunshine, Shadow of the Colossus they all came extremely close to feeling modern but they all suffer from an inverted x-axis on the camera, and importantly: NO WAY OF CHANGING THAT IN GAME! 😱

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
...there are plenty of games from around 2001~ which came close, but were following Mario 64s lead too closely and had the right stick directly control the position of the camera, so pushing the right stick to the right moved the camera object to the right, which makes sense logically but...

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
It's about the first game where you can fire it up using the default control scheme and it feels familiar to the modern player. Minimum requirements: - Left stick performs camera relative movement - right stick maneuvers an orbital camera with non-inverted x-axis ...

🥱 We all know how Halo changed FPS controls on console... But why do we never talk about which game did the same thing for THIRD PERSON games? I have my theory about who got there first, but if you think there was another, let me know in the replies!

Yeah, whilst modern gamers take for granted that "the right stick is for camera" I'm pretty sure the only reason Sony put two sticks on their pads was because N64 had ONE analogue stick and TWO WAS BETTER

Had that same question some time ago and found that 40 Winks for the PS1, had modern camera controls in 1999. But I can't remember if they were inverted or not... bsky.app/profile/tuba...

DreStation @drestation.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Ooooh nice, I'm gonna go check it out! While i accept inverting the Y axis as a minority preference, inverted C-axis for the camera is truly deranged and I cannot accept any control scheme that defaults to this with no way of changing in the options!

Fair. I was using “utopian dystopia” as a shorthand description of a society that presents itself as a utopia while revealing itself to be dystopian under further scrutiny - the contradiction was sort of the point. But I hear you; dystopia can already carry that implication 🤝

Destiny 2’s Control capture zones are one meter larger in diameter than in Destiny, but the visual projected on the ground is the same size. This makes it more likely you’ll get capture credit (and less likely that you’ll feel robbed) if you slide in at the last possible second.
