I went to CVS today for vaccines. The RX tech, female Muslim, was very gentle with my care. Her eyes and her touch were soft. Didn’t hurt at all. My phone alert showed another Cornell story after. We locked eyes. I said I wished I believed in hell. Her now strong voice said “I do.”

the postwar university for all its problems worked according to a pretty complex balance of cultural and economic capital with other kinds thrown in, but it looks like we can simplify our Bourdieu for the phase of neoliberal higher ed we’re in now, where the only thing that matters, ever, is money
Diagram of Bourdieu’s four fold grid of forms of capital — Economic, Cultural, Social, and Symbolic, showing all of them crossed out except for Economic, which is now the only form recognized by the neoliberal university

Dave Barry: still goated 🐐
Michelle has been a sportswriter for four decades. For most of her career, she has written more than 400 stories a year. So we’re talking thousands of stories, containing tens of thousands of names and statistics, and I’m guessing that in all that time she got maybe a dozen facts wrong. She had to be accurate, because she was — in fact still is — a woman, which means that every time she writes a story, she has to prove that she knows what she’s talking about. Men do not have to prove this, because men have penises, which give men a natural ability, from birth, to speak authoritatively about all sports, all the time. This is why a casual male sports fan can watch three minutes of a football game between two teams he has never seen before and declare, with complete confidence, that the coaches — who have been coaching for years, and whose jobs depend on their teams’ performance, and who have been up late night after night preparing for this game — have NO IDEA what they’re doing. The casual male sports fan can tell this at a glance, thanks to his penis.

My suspicion is that if AI saves anyone time, it is usually because it has redistributed workload to someone else. Someone less lazy and more competent. LLMs are a tool that creates work for skilled, conscientious people & reduces for annoying, useless tossers.

AI everything has also forced us to have so many meetings, discussions, policies, and changes. LLMs have wasted more of my time than any other anything. How such a wasteful, annoying, product is being successfully marketed as one that saves time & creates efficiencies I will never know.

I've added a section to my syllabus to address students recording their peers or class with their Meta glasses. I would love to know how other folks are handling this issue in their courses.
- To protect student privacy and maintain an open, respectful learning environment, students may not record, photograph, or otherwise capture audio or video of class without the prior consent of the instructor and all students who may be recorded.

- This policy applies to recordings made with phones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches, or
any other device.

- Respecting the privacy and participation of classmates is an essential part of our classroom expectations. Unauthorized recordings may not be shared, posted, or distributed in any form.

-Any recording for an academic accommodation must be approved in advance by the instructor and handled according to school policy.

It's conference season, so I wanted to share the AI refusal statement I put at the end of my presentations and book talks. Feel free to use it!
AI Refusal Statement
I did not use generative AI at any point in the production of this book or presentation, including the literature review, writing, editing, translation, organization, or any other task (e.g. brainstorming). To the extent that it is possible to know, I did not cite any studies that used generative AI.
Justification: GenAI technology is based on stolen labor, anti-solidarity between workers, class exploitation, structural racism, misogyny, environmental injustice, and climate destabilization.
